I prefer Osakan style okonomiyaki though that's most likely due to it's the one I got introduced to first. It's also tend to be the most dense which makes it a real filling meal compared to the Hiroshima style ones I tried.
Yet to try the Tokyo style, which I've been told is more 'watery'.

Watery is a charitable way to describe monjayaki.

Anyway Hiroshima okonomiyaki 4eva.

Possibly. Though I know a few years back large okonomiyaki style dishes was all the rage round Tokyo for a short while, though that may have just been a variation of that.
I never bothered to look into it as I tend to be running round trying out ramen, soba and abura soba dishes before everything else when I'm in Tokyo.

Yeah, it's the reason I never tried okonomiyaki, while I was happy trying every other local food I could get my hands on. Gimme ten different organ meats on a skewer, anything raw, anything pickled, but keep that mayonnaise the hell away.

I'm in Kyoto after 5 days in Tokyo and suddenly my will to walk all day just drained away. Good thing it's so easy to get around by bike (too bad I didn't pick a hotel with complementary bike)

They sell okonomiyaki kits at most Asian grocery stores in Toronto. The problem is shredding cabbage, which is the most annoying part of the task.

Uh, really? Sharp knife or a mandolin or a food processor with a slicing blade should set you up nicely. I personally using a mandolin (use a slice proof glove though).

If you haven't tried Japanese mayo because you dislike American mayo, you're doing yourself a disservice not eating it. If you've tried Japanese mayo and don't like it, I respect your decision. More Japanese mayo for me.

I went to Happy Pancake and thought it was great. I hate how overly sweet things are in North America where deserts taste like condensed hfcs and nothing else.

The only thing that surprised me was how strong the egg flavour was in the pancakes, but I honestly really liked it and am planning on having it again. I had the berries with cheese mouse. It was good!

I didn't have any problem with mayo on my food when I was eating my way up and down the length of Japan from Tokyo and Fukuoka and back again, until I saw mayo on a pizza. To hell with that.

Especially when that was paired with corn as well...

I like Sometaro near Asakusa for Osaka style. I haven’t stumbled on a Hiroshima shop in Tokyo yet.

Are there particular places people would recommend for okonomiyaki in Tokyo and Kyoto? And Nara, for that matter?

I have had the stuff in America, and I loving love it. Also, how are the okonomiyaki tacos/burritos at Taco Bell?

I have a trip to Tokyo and Kyoto planned for March 3rd; I'm seeing reports now of Tokyo canceling or postponing indoor events. I'm considering making alternate plans, going somewhere other than Tokyo. I'll probably spend the last few days in Kyoto regardless, but am thinking going to Osaka for a few days before that if the Coronavirus stuff gets much worse; first-time visit to Japan, I like food and historical stuff, anyplace that would make a good location to go to via Shinkansen other than Osaka assuming I need to be in Osaka on the 13th?

I wasn’t in Kyoto that long, but tbh one of my favourite okonomiyaki places was just in the little strip of restaurants they have underground at Kyoto stn. Also some really good okonomiyaki at this tiny bar/pub like one block north of Fushimi Inari, on the same street that the grounds exit onto, where Inari stn. is.

I’m wondering what Japan’s new economic world of poo poo is going to do to travel there in the next few years. Immediate impact seems to be lots of older shopping plazas and stores are closing.

Make Osaka your base. From there you can make easy day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, and a longer trip down to Hiroshima.

Osaka isn't as interesting a town as Tokyo, but, IMO, the people are nicer. It has a warmer atmosphere.

It really depends what you are looking for.

The Venn diagram of shoutengai and small shops closing and usual touristy spots is pretty small overlap, though.

Geography. Osaka is the central city of the region. If you want to explore all over Kansai it makes no sense to stay anywhere else. If you mainly just want to see one of the other cities, stay there.
