IIRC Catholicism is to Japan what eastern religion is to us: something we don't care enough to depict with any kind of accuracy but love to use as a quick shorthand for exotic spirituality

Absolutely. There's kind of a whole thing with Anime Catholicism, see also JRPGs where the church is either vaguely in the background and doesn't really have any coherent connection to the actual mythos of the world the plot explores, or obviously the evil catholic church where you inevitably fight the pope and/or God. Often a lot of elements are basically popular Christian trappings interpreted through more familiar (to them) Eastern religion, like 'nuns' who are closer to mikos (shrine maidens) than anything. It throws Western viewers for a loop because they see a lot of familiar trappings and symbols completely stripped of the unspoken context and implications we're raised to expect from them.

Hellsing is a pretty prominent exception as an anime which actually acknowledges how real-world Christianity works and is actually aware of Protestantism, with the Protestant/Catholic split being a major part of the plot, while the liberties taken are more deliberately so to be cool rather than out of ignorance or assumptions. (Of course, the author is apparently friends with a Japanese christian himself, incidentally the author of Trigun) While Evangeleon notoriously got a lot of Western viewers interested with the heavy use of Christian symbolism, many of whom took quite a while to realise that the creators really just used a bunch of names and symbols that looked cool and exotic without knowing or caring what the context was. Then there's cases that are possibly just loving with us, like that one Jojo show where they're strongly implied (more explicit in the original Japanese) to be chasing after the corpse of Jesus Christ. (Who, incidentally, was historically actually named Joshua, son of Joseph)

Kung Fu Hustle is fine but uneven for me. It's Looney Tunes and then some guys get violently dismembered in a not at all funny way and then its back to comedy for the rest of the run time.

That kind of reminds me of another movie (I think it was Korean) that I saw, where there was some underwater beast terrorizing a city, killing people and devouring them. Everything about the movie - the tone, the box, the description, made it sound like a horror/thriller film, and the first scene where the creature basically runs through a waterside park enforces this, but then there are scenes that feel like they were inserted for comedy, like having a family wailing and flailing like cartoon characters in front of a rememberance altar for a character or something, literally falling over each other repeatedly like they were trying to prove who was the most sad. It was jarring as hell.

As for Kung Fu Hustle, I think those scenes are just there to show 'oh wait things have actually become serious'

It's been a good decade since I saw it, but I recall the monster from the Host being really well made. It looked real and moved like you would expect a large slimy sea creature would.

Was the American who bravely rushes in to fight it, hurts the monster, and then gets eaten an analogy for US foreign policy?

For reference, the Host has this amazing sequence as well (which also mixes horror and goofiness):

EDIT: I guess the effects are not as amazing as they were at the time, mostly cause the scene is perfectly lit, which is a bold choice on its own.

Yuuup that's the scene.

And yeah that monster scene is good, specifically because it doesn't really use any monster tropes of people being alone, or making dumb choices or whatever - it's just a whole lot of people getting completely murdered by this freakish monster that is chasing them down like prey.

I think it's even better than that cause the monster only really kills a handful of people, behaving more like some kind of freakish wild beast released into a large city. Even when it gets inside the container, it looks like it's mostly thrashing around, with people able to escape from the door the monster entered from and other still alive after a minute or so.

The monster takes up physical space in a way most CGI doesn't. The part where it's clawing up the dirt embankment is really good, because obviously a sea creature wouldn't really do well on that kind of surface.

Also I never noticed it before but it has puffer fish teeth and puffer fish are stone cold killers of the deep.

A big part of it is that the movie is designed in such a way that it's very entertaining even when the monster isn't actually on screen. In the end the monster only appears for like a total of maybe 10 minutes so they were able to completely focus their attention and resources of those select few scenes. So the attention to detail in those scenes is top notch.

It's not like American film hasn't done dumber things. Like The Man With The Golden Gun where they did one of the most dangerous and spectacular car stunts in history and then put a loving slide whistle sound effect over it. Or how many American action and horror movies have dumb stoner comedy. (albeit there's definitely different sub-genres there)

Korean cinema apparently messes with Western viewers a bit because they've gotten good at making movies that look like Hollywood style films in presentation, but use their own genre trappings that they developed by themselves.

I'm reminded of the story of Jaws where the mechanical shark prop barely worked, so they had to fill out the runtime with plot and characterisation and make use of the camera and soundtrack, which ended up being way scarier and more interesting.

You're right that it's not just about the comedy, it's about the specific Looney Tunes/Three Stooges style comedy that American seem to be surprised by. Maybe because it's considered old-school and outdated compared to stuff like what you referred to; stoner comedy or the kind of sarcastic quip one-liners we're used to seeing in action and even horror movies.

This is irrational but this is the thread for it so well done. I had the misfortune of going to see Kung Pow without knowing what it was. I was a kid and it was the only film that was starting soon and not rated R. Only time I've ever wanted to leave a theatre. If I'd known you could demand a refund on bad movies I totally would have left and done so but I was a kid so I sat through it.

Kung Fu Hustle is a legit good film though.
