I had a pair of armoured jeans that were supposed to look like a regular pair of jeans with all the thickness and protection of proper leathers. I found that my backside slid all over the seat when I wore them, as opposed to proper leathers that sort of stuck me to the seat. Much more stable.

Johnson probably would have and should have gotten shitcanned today There's a pretty big difference. Holland did a long history of near-misses in dangerous maneuvers and never faced any disciplinary consequences because safety culture is for pussies. Johnston did a reasonably safe maneuver and was told not to do it any more, and didn't.

Another problem as I understand it with that type of thing (getting in very deep water for any length of time) is that the various seals for non engine stuff like axles, wheel hubs, suspension, those seals aren't meant to hold back water pressure from the outside so you're likely to end up with failures in other components after the fact. One of those probably fine in the moment things if you're in an emergency situation but lol at this person obviously just doing this poo poo for fun "because they have a snorkel" and then getting hosed for their hubris.

Johnston did a reasonably safe maneuver and was told not to do it any more, and didn't. I was probably overreacting as far as Johnston goes, but I still think he displayed some irresponsibility. A 1g barrel roll is probably the safest possible inverted maneuver but a perfect 1g roll is still not an even 1g across the entire airframe and does put additional stress on the airframe. The further you get out from the centerline of the aircraft the greater the positive or negative gs become, and I have some doubt he crunched numbers to be certain that the maneuver would stay within acceptable g ranges. It's said that most airworthy aircraft should be capable of performing a 1g roll and evidently the 707 is capable of it, but the responsible thing to do would be to confer with people and figure out if it can be done safely and make sure you've got everything lined up right instead of dropping it on everyone as a surprise. And of course maybe he did confer with engineers and other relevant parties, excluding the president of Boeing, and determine that the maneuver was within the limits of airframe and that he would need such and such altitude to perform the maneuver etc, in which case I'm a dweeb
