I wish I could remember his name, it's been about 15 years now. I saw him once after deployment but never again. He was definitely an awkward guy for a warzone, but Ferrell is too old for the role now. Dude was like, 32, married with 4 or 5 kids. It wasn't his first deployment either. I hope he's doing well. I had moments where I jumped in with the vocal atheists, because I was young and an rear end in a top hat and spent the previous ten years peeling back the layers of bullshit religion is, it wasn't a moment of pride. I still don't believe in sky wizards, there's something more comforting about hurtling through space on a rock, rather than being led to believe we're all just pawns in some lovely game a handful of gods are loving with for fun. I sincerely would believe that bigfoot is a god that roams the world, blessing people with his presence, and determining which people they encounter are worthy of meeting the aliens. It's literally more plausible.

Catholicism is largely why I gave up on religion. Well, that and realizing everyone just lies to propagate their own causes and wallets. But I guess pedophiles have to work somewhere.

Yeah I'm reaching for that. Bigfoot loves you, why would you doubt his proof of travels on this earth? Just because you've never seen a bigfoot, doesn't mean they don't see you. From those trees, over there, at night while chewing on berries. Don't disparage the holy relics of his mighty footprint. Entirely more plausible than gods to me. Not that I believe it, it's pretty low on the believability scale, but you could probably raise a small cult with some woodsy ramblings like that. I'm aware the tracks are proven to be bears stepping in their own tracks, or people loving with other people. It's like when crop circles were the big to-do and it was just two guys with some ropes and boards, and people still eat that poo poo up because ALIENS!!1!

my kinda ape posted:Democracy dies in darkness! Bernie's wrong about the timing of this whole thing. It's not WaPo releasing the info because the Nevada caucus is tomorrow - that would be dumb as gently caress because the *vast* majority of Democrats have voted already! It's a early-voting caucus, not the dumb in-person poo poo that Iowa required. What's *much* more likely is that the Russian story hit yesterday, about Trump. In doing the checks for all of the stuff, journalists started talking to administration people, both biased and not. Those people then probably went "oh yeah, we told Bernie about that a month ago, plus we're briefing the full Congress on March 10th." WaPo and others didn't ask those questions because they didn't know where to look. If this kind of thing was released before an in-person primary, or Super Tuesday, don the tin foil Bernie is getting hosed again!!!1 This really just feels like journalists sniffing a scent, running down the traps for the Trump story, then catching Bernie in the process. Bernie's response was perfect otherwise!

Godholio posted:This is a really good thread/journal article. New specific data is always good, but the main takeaway is that inflation for necessities has outpaced inflation as a whole so that the CPI measured stagnation of adjusted median income for the last few decades has hit the majority of people even worse than the top line numbers would indicate. That's been a pretty "duh" conclusion for a while. Godholio posted:He's the big anti-gun guy from NYC. If that's all you know about him, he's obviously a liberal champion. So is the "liberal" category a catch-all for both liberals and leftists? At this point it seems like American liberals are just centrists.

Both the subhuman pieces of poo poo he killed were in for life for molesting kids under 14.

Tonight I dropped it on my brother- who grew up on welfare and free lunch, is currently out on Workman's Comp, and will be on disability the rest of his life- who was complaining about Socialism. "Well, we should help people when they need help." Almost there, dude. Almost there. He thinks everyone can bootstrap there way to being rich. He doesn't realize how lucky he has gotten- he was expelled from HS, never got a GED, always lived at home, and every job he has gotten has been someone hooking him up. He's never actually had to job search. He also never gave a gently caress about politics or any of this until his fat rear end destroyed his shoulder and been stuck at home watching Fox News. He's a Trump supporter, mostly because he's racist at heart, but can't admit it because "I have black friends". I don't have to deal with him often, but gently caress it's depressing when I do.

facialimpediment posted:Yeah, that's what I meant. If you wouldn't mind, could you post how the experience is? From what I gather, it's just a paper ballot with preferences, without the dumb self-sorting and physical shuffling around the voting place. The early voting was a "fill in the bubble for your preferences" paper ballot, which required waiting in three lines. Line 1 you filled out a little paper with your name (and if you were newly registering or changing your reg, address), then when you got to the front you'd either go through all the paperwork (new/changed) or just be given a Secretary of State ID number. Then it was off to line 2. Once you hit the front of line 2, they had you fill out a Google Forms page on an ipad or w/e, then looked up your SoS ID and gave you a Voter ID, which you'd enter into the ipad. It was also on an actual sticker they'd affix to your ballot, which you were then let off to fill out. Line 3 was after you finished the ballots. One person would look over your ballot, and if it checked out would give you the go ahead to stick it in the box. That being said, the day-of caucus back in 2016 was indeed the "everyone just sorta sits around in a group for (candidate) and then gets counted". No clue if the in-person one will be the same this year or not.

Also, part of a lot of new prison law suits by groups like the PLO mandates that these inmates go to lower security levels, regardless of statements like that. It's a consequence of trying to make some parts of prison more humane.

Desiring that prison be ever more brutal is really bad if one also thinks the cops and justice system railroad innocent people into prison for inordinate amounts of time. Also bad if you think that a gladiatorial murder-zone is not what prison should be. I’ll take a just approach to rehabilitation all day over “hehe, sometimes a bad person gets extra-judicially murdered, yay!”
