I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people that do.

Man, Axiom Verge is such a great game. I'm really excited for the sequel.

Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.

Has anyone played that Dreams game? Is it worth it? Are the various games people make cool enough to check out? Is the creation stuff easy to get into?

Yeah, I think so. I got it in early access and it looks like they’ve made a lot of improvements since then. It’s really easy to make things, and the you can make something abstract or hyper detailed with the same tools. You can also remix other peoples’ creations or just borrow assets from them to make your own hodgepodge creations. I wound up buying the Move controllers for it but they didn’t make me a better artist. However, I was still able to cobble together some ugly stuff I’m proud of that uses the different systems.

There’s a lot of already created stuff out there now. The quality on some of it is great and I’m usually surprised that it wasn’t made by Media Molecule to show off the system. There are also some really, uh, outsider art pieces like skits of Goku fighting Roger Rabbit. The auto surf option is great if you just want to chill out for a while and sample creations. They fixed the thing where if you did auto surf it would break up games that used multiple scenes (title page is one scene, then it used to shuffle in some unrelated content before getting back to the original game). The thread here isn’t very active but the game seems to be plenty alive. I would recommend it if any of what it’s selling sounds interesting.

I just realized after 20 years that Porco turned back human at the end of Porco Rosso while watching the film with my kids.

Thomas mahler, yes. He wrote a long post about game design and how botw is just held up by name, contrasting with his game, essentially the old belda argument with a dash of argument from authority.

Some folks can't wrap their mind around a game world that doesn't pepper you with objectives in your pov

I checked their perfect score list and tbh there's a lot of excellent games there so you can't really go wrong.

If you aren't allergic to furries, there's also Dust: An Elysian Tail - maybe a bit too linear for your taste though.

Also the Guacamelee games - though again they are a bit linear.

It's a really weird list. Lots of slightly strange picks and millions of games that are missing.

I actually remember wanting to buy Nintendogs because I heard Famitsu gave it a perfect score. How did that happen.

How is the mobile Animal Crossing? Does it deliver any of what makes the series charming, or is it just a mobile disaster of IAP? I’m assuming the latter, but figured I’d ask.

It's absolutely the latter. It strips out everything that made the series good, and takes away that hook that keeps you coming back every single day. It's a terrible cash grab that attempts to exploit people into spending hundreds of dollars at a time for cosmetic items.
