The ending didn't ruin it for me. The crime sequences were too stupid for words. Each driving sequence has at least one moment where the gang is in the clear but they come screaming around a corner in a way guaranteed to draw attention. "Okay, guys, we've gotten away clean, what should we do now? Hey, let's do some great driving stunts!"

Yeah, but the Michael Myers mask bit was pretty good.

Escaping a helicopter chase in your red sports car by finding two other red sports cars is a stretch. At least make it a grey Honda Civic.

He hid between a Jetta and a Chevy Cruze. They only looked alike from the air because they're red cars with sunroofs.

Point taken that nobody drives red cars anymore though.

The driving sequences are good. The music is good. The single long take shot is good. Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx are good. Kevin Spacey has a satisfying character arc to the shattered remains of his career bleeding out on the concrete...the rest isn't very good.

This about sums up my feelings for it. Not great, but better than F&F movies.

Also, much like Ronin, I really enjoyed the driving sequences.

Ant-Man is kinda weird there, because everything in it that looks like it was an awesome Edgar Wright idea just... wasn't even there in his, it came later.

The one that makes complete sense to me is that Hope was added post-Wright. If I had to raise an issue with him it's that he's not great about giving female characters spotlight. It's not that he does them poorly when he does write them, it's that they don't really seem to naturally occur to him.

Regarding female characters, IIRC the comics ending of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World wasn't written by the time the movie was about to come out & the movie initially had Scott end up with Knives instead of Ramona.

Oh no!😱

From what I remember the Colin Farrel Total Recall reboot was different enough that if felt more like a new attempt to adapt the book than a remake of the verhoeven film. Still wasnt particularly good though. If the original Robocop had never existed, but the newer one somehow still got made then I think it would be thought of as an okay action sci fi movie with a largely decent cast and some big flaws. But because its a remake of Robocop it suffers by comparison. A really good robocop remake would have had a hill to climb, a mediocre one was doomed.

Having said that, I think the most telling thing about either film to me personally is that I saw both of them in the cinema and I entirely forget that they exist unless something specifically reminds me.

I'm of the opinion that if the Farrel reboot was named something completely unrelated to Total Recall - it would have been received better.

I tried to watch the live action Aladdin movie and it solidified something for me:

There's no point in a remake that says nothing new. The live action Disney movies are basically shot-for-shot and are worse for it. Plus they don't have the charm of animated movies because that would be nearly impossible. They're all trainwrecks and I suspect Mulan will be the same except to even better in the Chinese market.

The RoboCop remake ultimately is more shallow than the original. Instead of being a condemnation of police corruption and corporate short-sightedness, it's just "evil corporate guy does predictable evil things."

What's even more frustrating is that director José Padilha's previous works were about the police & the corruption that can take place in its position of power. His Robocop had a chance to explore it, but it got a quick once-over before focusing on Michael Keaton's Steve Jobs impression.

Where is the police corruption in the original Robocop? The cops are portrayed as beholden to their corporate overlords and not in the main very happy about it.

The thing that was disappointing about Aladdin is that it's almost got something appealing and different going on, but it's too corporately-driven to actually use it. Will Smith's a pretty solid casting choice for the Genie, chiefly because he's absolutely NOT Robin Williams but still has his own ways to nail the balance between being comic relief while still being an actual non-joke character without it all falling over. If you want to make an entirely new, interesting alternative take on Aladdin, 'Will Smith as the Genie' is a REALLY good start.

But they never really give themselves enough creative room to make that casting choice work, it's still basically just Aladdin but with a slightly more feminist-friendly Jasmine, and very rarely you see a glimpse of a fun, interesting Fresh Prince Genie. Although that still puts it above the Lion King remake, because one squandered new idea is better than no new ideas at all.

EDIT: Also the Lion King remake basically cut Be Prepared, so that wins the 'worst Disney remake' award by default, in perpetuity. Nothing they can still do will be worse than cutting Be Prepared.

Yeah, Will Smith as the Genie is an excellent choice and he does a fantastic job and is very charming and funny. It's even more impressive that the movie is such a nothing. It's not that it's awful. It's fine. Just - fine.

While the remake actually showed police corruption, directly confronted with the issue that when you have a supercop who follows the letter of the law exactly, he quickly ends up arresting half his precinct until someone hits the off switch.

It was delightful! They had a unique opportunity to incorporate more of the source material (Shere Khan's backstory, Kaa as a storyteller that becomes an ally, the drama with the wolf pack, King Louie/Bandar Log as menacing figures), as well as the original animated version being extremely out of date and needing a huge rework to work at all. Instead of having to make jokes to differentiate itself from the original (Lion King's fart joke nod, etc.), Jungle Book was so much its own thing that it needed to make references to remind you of the original (the two songs, Kaa saying to trust her, etc.). It got a lot of poo poo but I really enjoyed the hell out of it, too.

I think it's safe to say that one really kicked off the "live action remake of Disney animated classics" renaissance. I also enjoyed Pete's Deagon, which changed a fair amount of stuff from the original but succeeded in being a good "boy & his ____" story. Heck, even Carl Urban as the antagonist worked, as he wasn't cartoonish as a villain & had understandable goals.
