Got a message from my friend, a retired doctor in Northern Italy near the current outbreakquote:"Hi, we have currently a localized coronavirus outbreak in some Northern Italy areas. The most close is our town where an elderly couple is infected from today. Other affected areas are close to Padua. At the moment we have about 3 deaths, 18 in intensive care units and 160 infected people. This evening first case in Milano (a doctor of hospital infective unit). We have asked for our daughter to return from Milano immediately (travelling by train strongly discouraged). Outbreak could be autochthonous.

Burt Sexual posted:Can you explain the health care system for those of us that are uninformed? I remember reading a journal article in grad school comparing China's healthcare system to the U.S. and the best line was something like "This proves that a wealthy, advanced industrial nation can design a healthcare system worse than the U.S. " But the only substantive things I can remember is limited to nonexistent infrastructure except in the major metropolitan areas and an increasing reliance on health savings accounts. This was like more than ten years ago.

Burt Sexual posted:Can you explain the health care system for those of us that are uninformed? If you want actual healthcare you need to directly pay for it because your government supplied care is an absolute joke, to the point where people refer to hospitals VIP areas. In smaller towns who have worse doctors you are also basically engaging in a bidding war with the other people attempting to pay for the actual doctor who knows goddamn anything due to poor training and all the good doctors going to big cities, compounded by in some cases needing to engage in a bidding war just to get an appointment since those can be resold so enjoy combining the joy of ticketmaster+your healthcare. Beyond this, the overall quality of hospitals, especially outside of top tier cities, are absolutely rampant with overcrowding and poor disease control*. The absolute worst thing though in my opinion is that actual medicine must compete with TCM bullshit so your doctor can't turn you away without getting perscribed a grab bag of pills (almost certainly containing antibiotics) regardless of what you actually have because otherwise you might go to the TCM guy next time. None of this touches on the fact that unless you are at a top tier hospital you can also reliably expect the staff to put in 0 effort into your care even if you pay their bribes and if you don't get a second opinion on everything be ready to be misdiagnosed in fascinating and strange new ways. *Source: Have had a family member treated at the premier hospital in Wuhan a few years back and it was, uh, not great even then

As for "how subsidized" nobody knows but I can tell you it vary wildly province to province and city to rural. Hukou is too complicate to explain in a couple paragraphs.

It is a pretty big feature of communist countries that they claim to or maybe are working towards it, but achieving it tends to be temporary at best. And anyways modern China is whatever they say they are at the moment. Communist, capitalist with chinese characteristics, whatever is convenient.

My work has about a 10x bet pool going right now for if we'll get shut down due to The Crown's Virus. Closest to the date we are shut down wins the piggy. My bet is on March 30 being the first full no-work day, but we had a dude come back from a conference in Japan last week that apparently got super sick over the weekend so it might be that one of the technicians that has severe tourette's will win since he bet on March 9st. I hope not. I want that 100 bucks. How else will I buy canned corned for the after times?

I said this in the other thread but I’ll say it here too. If you can change how your 401k/ investment accounts are allocated you’d be a drat fool not to move them to the most secure investing possible as soon as possible. Ok so nothing happens? You lost out on a few % return over the short term. If the markets do take a huge poo poo your money would be a lot more secure and you could save your self a substantial amount of money. We were talking about it at work and we all know people that lost literally 100s of thousands nearly overnight in 2008. Not saying it’s going to be nearly that bad but the market is definitely going to dip and no one is really sure how far it’s going to go. It literally takes like 3 min ( with Voya at least) to change it and IMO you’d be a fool not to do it for the short term.

the deal about recessions is that they continually stay scary and unemployment stays high for literal years after a stock market bottom, so it takes insane chutzpah or plutocratic wealth to actually buy at the bottom so the top plutocrats have both and they make a fuckin killing on recessions but those 2008 upper middle class peeps were double hosed because the sold low and bought high, lol warren buffet may take the 25% alpha hit to berkshire by moving it all to cash(which he has done), but it gets real hard for people like you to buy material parts of fortune 500 companies at a 80% discount bob dobbs is dead fucked around with this message at 06:31 on Feb 24, 2020 |
