Ramrod Hotshot posted:Is this actually any worse than just regular old flu? in a micro sense, no, it isn't in a macro sense, yes, much worse because it seems far more infectious & contagious (based on what will likely be faulty data that severely underestimated the spread); there aren't enough icu beds or medical staff in any country to deal with it so the elderly, smokers, and immunocompromised are going to be dying at a much greater clip than the flu additionally, the panic surrounding it will cause much greater suffering from economic collapse than the virus itself otoh it's hellworld, and the market will be up 690 points tomorrow because tesla will release a new batch of cooked numbers

Ramrod Hotshot posted:Is this actually any worse than just regular old flu? Yes. It's the worst flu you've ever had plus pneumonia. You go from ehhh it's a cold, couple days I'll be fine. Then, ok it's the flu a week and all good. Then one morning you wake up and you know something is very wrong. So you go to your local little county hospital with 4 ER beds. Nurse comes in takes your vitals, looks worried and leaves. Then the on call doc comes in, checks. Looks worried leaves, comes back with 4 other people. They look step out, come back and a nice lady comes in trying to look cheerful. Sweet heart she says (its the south) sugar we have to send you to university, we don't have the EQUIPMENT here to help you. You ride a hour in dead silence in the ambulance. For some reason you have never been so calm. You know it's serious, you feel your life slipping away. Doesn't matter, you catch your reflection. Why are you smiling? They roll you into the ER in the best hospital in the state, a nice young nurse says, baby we are gonna have to intubate you. You smile and nod. Ok go for it. The next voice you hear, you think it's your WIFE. Is it really hers? Is any of this real? Where did those weird rear end elf looking things go. Baby...cough. You open you eyes cough and see a tube being pulled out. Water, please someone give me water. They can't yet they say. You beg, pleading, please just a tiny amount. Someone gives you about a teaspoon of water. loving heaven, ok this is real. How long you ask. How long have I been asleep? You went in Dec 3, it's now Dec 21st. You pass out, wake up the next day. In a regular room. Family and friends are there. You realise, holy poo poo I feel high as gently caress. It's the fentanyl drip they used to keep you under. You talk mad poo poo to everyone for about a day. Nurses, doctors, specialist. That sweet older black lady that brings you your food. They laugh, you laugh. Good times. Doctors come in with students, they start telling students what a drat miracle you are. 3% sp02 Had to pull your blood and reoxygenate it. Thought you wouldn't make it. Already a couple of people in ICU, younger or older with the same symptoms didn't. They let you go home on Xmas eve. You get home and your little 6 year old boy breaks down crying when he sees you. That night it snows. Xmas 2013. Best one ever.

Is there a non doomer reason younger doctors and nurses appear to be dropping from this? Like is there truth to some non-medical twitter person speculating that like being infected with a little virus gives your immune system a headstart vs getting an initial bucket load while people sneeze in your eyes all day? Or is this like w/ 3000 infected medical professionals .4% CFR for under 60 is still 12 ppl and it's going to grab headlines when they die vs olds

another reminder that one of the hypothesis of coronaviruses showing up is that they're more successful in older populations and as we've gotten older we're going to see more of them the fact that it looks to basically be "the flu" in younger people and "murder death kill" in older populations sure makes me go

Vishass posted:Is there a non doomer reason younger doctors and nurses appear to be dropping from this? The latter, and drs are going to be infected more than the gen population, thus further skewing the statistics as you have a high risk population that gets it more, thus more chances for outliers. Drs can still have various other complicating factors that lead to the worst cases.

Once people start holing up the transmission slows, as we have seen in china. Even accounting for PRC numbers fuckery, it has not spread like wildfire in various other parts of china. Once the population is mostly staying put, it will slow down. The hope is we can slow spread enough to help manage the worst cases enough to limit the death rate. That's why people are buying extra food and poo poo, just to make staying put more pleasant and less stressful, and to help limit opportunities to get infected/spread the illness.

yeah china can actually do a lockdown. would the US government be able to tell businesses to not fire their employees for not showing up for two weeks as a precautionary measure? to tell landlords to not collect rent until further notice? to arrange for free door-to-door food delivery? of course not, all of those things are unthinkable under capitalism.

I think Trump will try to lean on business to behave so they don't throw the election to Bernie, and we saw with the bullshit bonuses after the tax cut that they'll make at least token efforts to help him politically, but in a prolonged situation where they're losing money it's going to be everyone for themselves in this country.
