Pistol_Pete posted:

Yeah, I said earlier in the thread that the Johnson government is shaping up to be government by announcement: you control the daily news cycle by making some sort of eye-catching proclamation, deflect any questions about details, reap a round of positive headlines in the press and then do it all over again the next day. Nobody seems to notice or care that you're not following through on any of it and I guess you'd be able to cycle back to previous announcements once a few months have passed. I'm surprised nobody's thought of this before, it certainly seems to work a treat.

its just a guess but i imagine Cummings actually does want them to go through with social spending and stuff because... well, its the obvious thing to do and would also be beneficial to pretty much everyone in the tory coalition.
i do think a "national socialism" if you will, combined by the tories with xenophobia, racism, transphobia etc, all that good culture war poo poo, would be extremely popular in the UK. (I also think a national socialism without all that poo poo would be very popular, but nobody is offering that and tory voters won't bite if nobody is suffering)

but i think the actual money men are far too psycho to go along with it, so even if a bit gets done I bet its not for long. Libertarianism is extremely deeply rooted in the tories, they'll do the vile racism stuff but i doubt they can commit to public spending, heavens no!

yeah ofc, the question was "is the labour party a vehicle for revolutionary change?" and the answer isn't fully in but our projection is: "LOL"

but otoh it takes extremely little effort to engage in the electoral system so you may as well

also lol "mair" reminds me that i got a pamphlet from a candidate for scottish labour deputy leadership (this is a thing thats happening???) and her big endorsement splashed on the back is gordon loving brown lmao. 10 years ago that woulda been nothing to brag about, its hilarious now

Jackie Baillie is absolute loving dogshit. Among the worst as far as ScotLab goes and think of the toerags that includes. Of course Gordon Broon endorses her. I feel like if more people in this thread were members of Scottish Labour & paid attention to its politicians there would be a lot less faith in electoral politics.

Engaging in the electoral system in a limited manner, ie voting, sure. But people are spending hours upon hours campaigning and attending meetings & all that seems to me like time that could be spent better organising out with a social democratic political party. I don't know what the gently caress the answers but it seems like outreach among working people would be good, but also those not in work. Outside a JobCentre seems a place where it'd be pretty easy get people with an experience of how the state is loving them. Groups that protect your housing rights. poo poo that directly impacts people in a far more obvious & less abstract way than Westminster politics. Real material poo poo.

I'm not a theorist. I'm not particularly smart but certainly above average when it comes to being "well-read" about politics. I dunno.

Mostly I'm just mad at the guy who thinks that it's parliament or an armed uprising, which are both about as likely to lead to socialism (though at least the uprising would have a bit of glory attached to it).

Ranting woman on BBC Question Time linked to National Front

BBC bosses have been urged to explain the selection process on Question Time after an audience member who went on a racist rant was linked to far-right groups.

Reports over the weekend suggested the woman who made the anti-immigrant remarks had twice stood for election for the National Front and is currently an enthusiastic supporter of Tommy Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League.

The row stems from last Thursday’s edition of the politics show, when the woman sitting in the middle of the front row spoke for 75 seconds, calling on the UK to close its borders “completely”.

Alarmingly, the programme then clipped the entire rant and shared it on their social media accounts – without any correction or fact checking. It has now been watched nearly 7 million times.

i'd quite like a pledge from one of the candidates "i will never mention israel or palestine again as long as i live"

e: i never actually opened my letter from kier, i love my poster.

did other people pick up on the "Authority" dogwhistle aka "im the only man"? cause kier does not look like an authoratitive chap at all and the rest of his pitch is quite conciliatory so that bit stands out. unless hes trying to decorum bojo and say he doesnt deserve authority? unfortunately the english think being a fat posh eton wanker is authority

at least from his pledges it looks like hes running far to the left of pre-corbyn labour, so that overton window got shifted at least

an anti-intervention act sounds loving great but its partnered with "the UK should be a force for international justice" which... if taken in the new labour way.... uhhhh!

He fought against poverty and injustice in the 19th century. He was suspended from the RC church (and I'm not sure he might have been excommunicated at some point too) for his work.

Just got this today from my CLP. Guh.

quote:

Sent on behalf of Clive Betts MP

Subject - Leadership, Deputy Leadership and NEC Ballots

Dear Member

Leadership, Deputy Leadership and NEC Ballots

In the next few days all members will be receiving ballot papers so they can choose who they want to be the Leader of the Party.  There will also be ballot papers for Deputy Leader and for two NEC members.

For me the most important issue is having lost four General Elections can we elect a Leader who can go on and win the next election in four- or five-years’ time.  A fifth defeat would be absolutely devastating. The Labour Party only exists as a meaningful Party if it can win elections to put into practice its values of equality and social justice.

I have already sent all members my views on the General Election campaign and why we lost. I know that not every member agrees with me but I have been pleased by those who have come back with positive comments.
I do believe that in order to win back millions of people who, in the past, have voted Labour but did not on this occasion we are going to show we have changed and we are going to show that we have a Leader who instinctively those people feel could be trusted to run the country.  That is why I am backing Keir Starmer.  I appreciate that some colleagues are supporting Lisa Nandy who has run a good campaign as well. Members will of course be able to indicate a first and second preference.

I am also supporting Ian Murray as Deputy Leader for very similar reasons.  The additional factor with Ian is that as the only Scottish MP he has an incredible record of winning his seat against the odds, a seat which used to be Tory now has an 11,000 Labour majority.  He is not merely good at articulating political theories on the ground he has campaigned successfully to win a seat under incredibly difficult circumstances.
