Friend was working down the list of things that I was telling him to change the passwords or access to and when he got down to his company's provided RRSP the person on the other end of the phone asked if he wanted to cancel the impending withdrawal and transfer.
:eyepop:

He told me after he hung up the phone he had "the moment" where he no longer had any possible sympathy for her or her situation. That wasn't a mad dash and grab, that was a calculated attempt at theft, something that she had no ties to, but something that she had the time and willingness to try and steal.

I told him to also talk to a financial advisor and go through everything together to make sure she doesn't have any more surprises in store for him.

Ask the RRSP administrator where that redemption was headed and see if he can get her on the line for fraud / theft over $5000.

Then track down where the request originated and :murder:

This is the impression I'm getting, too. When they first told us everything was 'on schedule to start reopening' and local business slowly started doing that, it felt premature. Nothing had improved really at that point, but it was right after the economics of the situation became well known.

But the a few days after the number of new cases in the city quickly and sharply flattened out. It's a miracle, right? What are the odds that that would happen right after they decide to lower their guard?

He's now of the frame of mind that he needs to build an active case against her so that he can protect whatever is left. He's investigating how she managed to convince the person at the other end of the phone to transfer his RRSP into another account, and I imagine heads are going to roll in that company for such an oversight. If they find proof that she just asked, didn't lie at all, and they were like, "duh ok" then it's still a grey area legally, but if she did use some manner of fraud (possible a forged signature) then they can start to build that case.

Atopian posted:

I didn't ask, but he paid off the rest of their mortgage with his half of the inheritance, so I'm guessing not much left. Their shared account was supposed to be an emergency fund, and I think it was something like 100k or so, so she managed to get "her half" from it as well. Right now he has a good job, a car and a house that's paid off (in Toronto no less) so he's sitting pretty sweet financially, even after taking a 1 million dollar hit like this. I'm not too keep to pry into dollar amounts, but it seems he's on the right track to keep things from disappearing from now on.

Will do.. just curious who is your logistics provider? I use FedEx Trade Networks and my arrangement with the factory is FCA.. FedEx does door to door for me which I arrange from my end.

With the factories behind I’m actually more worried about the container ship not having enough cargo to justify sailing so I get the goods in time.

Oh I've been out of that game for literally 20 years. Back when I did it we were getting our PCBs and metal cases made in china and it was a poo poo show to say the least.

I'm more just curious to see how things are on the ground level for people actually trying to get things done. The news is poo poo most of the time so I'm just interested in hearing people's real world tales.

I was watching Jeopardy the other night, and one of the clues brought up the Three Ts of Chinese Censorship. Made me wonder how many complaints of hurt feelings the network/producers will get. (A few minutes later, a commercial for Shen Yun came on, ha)

In other news, I heard this story being discussed on the radio today:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-fourth-retirement-concepts-seniors-home-taken-over-by-province/

The government of British Columbia has seized control of a for-profit senior care facility, due to lack of proper care, unsanitary conditions, and insufficient staffing.
The facility was owned by Retirement Concepts, which is the largest provider of for-profit senior care in BC.

quote:

Concerns have been raised about the care of vulnerable seniors since 2017, when the federal government approved the sale of Retirement Concepts to Beijing-based Anbang Insurance Group.

The law that allowed the province to take control of badly run senior facilities was passed in 1990. Since then, only 7 facilities have been seized in this way. 6 of them belonged to Retirement Concepts, and 4 were just in the past few months. According to the BC Health Minister, there has been no forthcoming comments or explanations from the company, or the CCP.

A Registered Retirement Savings Plan. You can contribute a certain amount to it each year (tax free) and then when you want to cash it in, it is taxed at the marginal rate.

Chinese couple, left his chinese wife and kids in the US. Went home to china and married a local 20 year old. Never filing a divorce in the US.

I have first hand accounts of at least 2 of these and 2nd/3rd hand of many more.

None of them send money for child support and all of them took every bit of cash and maxed out credit cards that they could.

edit : your friends account lines up 100% with what I have seen. dude has to make sure every thing is covered including making sure he gets a local divorce so he can get her off the house/car/creditcards ect. One of the guys that did this tried to sell the house from under his wife and 3 kids.
