Hedenius posted:Should just merge with this thread. Electro industrial like aggrotech stuff and gothy synthpop is pretty far from noise and drone IMHO. Neither thread is high traffic but I think the crossover in artists covered is pretty small. Also I really like what in this scene gets called rhythmic noise but I guess I probably would have to call it "techno with a bit of distortion" if we were hanging out with real noise fans

What makes a power noise track / artist power noise, as opposed to some other subgenre?

Being gratuitously on-topic for a moment, Psychophile were a good Brighton goth-scene EBM band in the early 2000s. I have both these CDs in a box somewhere, and my "Vodka Milk" T-shirt hasn't completely worn out. Both albums are up on Bandcamp now.

I could go either way, but I do really like the new electro industrial-ish/noise-ish acts like Health, Blanck Mass, and Street Sects. I also genuinely like stuff like Daughters, which feels closer to straight up noise. Don't think I could be bothered to follow a separate thread though. Is noise just extreme industrial? Like I think about "pure" industrial and I think Einstürzende Neubauten, people banging on metal objects in a warehouse. When I think about noise, it's basically just that, but more.

Yeah I’m really REALLY into Blanck Mass. i feel like expanding the theme of the thread would be god because I’m never sure if like EBM and other obscure dark electro genres fit.

Daughters are a noise rock band and have little to do with actual noise. Noise is this and this and this sort of thing.

Right, noise isn't music. Imagine I said "less electro and more noise rock" instead of "closer to straight up noise" EBM and related darkwave stuff totally go here.

I’m in favor of merging the threads. Unrelated: Danger - Octopus! posted:Electro industrial like aggrotech stuff and gothy synthpop I allways had the naive idea that electro industrial was like Puppy back when they were good and had to go to loving wikipedia to check out the term. Even the worst subgenre, industrial metal, was mentioned Its true and it hurts, man.

I'm in favor of making a new thread. I starting this thread 9 years ago when I was far more active on SA than I am now. I think the music has evolved considerably since then and the original post should reflect those changes. I'd volunteer but, sadly, my music taste falls more into "cold wave" stuff like Linea Aspera and Minuit Machine nowadays; I don't keep up with Industrial like I used to. Though I'm seeing Skold/3TEETH/Carnifex this weekend. I'm starting to feel old, goons.

Im also super into stuff like Minuit Machine and evening though they aren’t exactly the same genre, there’s a lot of parallel listener base

What about making it sort of a general dark music thread? Like if I Die You Die would cover it, it fits sort of thing.

Agreeing re the ID:YD categorisation above. I guess I feel that a new thread should be for the broad ground of artists that goth/industrial fests and clubs would play as well as less dancefloor oriented stuff.. whether it's trad goth and postpunk through to darkwave, electro industrial, EBM (whether old school artists who you might see at Familientreffen each year or the current crop of artists who sit firmly in the techno scene and are a long way away from goth), earnest Germans doing depeche mode derived synthpop, rhythmic noise and the artists who hit that middle ground between EBM/rhythmic noise and industrial techno. But tbh, I'm an Old so probably out of touch anyway, and I guess what gets considered part of this broad genre church kinda differs a bit depending where you are as well, so whoever sets up a thread can do what they like and I'll keep on posting v occasional links to stuff

As a Proud Tampa Goth, I think Communion After Dark and Obscura Undead are two organizations that cover generally the genres that might fit under the dark music umbrella, as a reference point. Though I would probably include more stuff like Blanck Mass as well.

I guess a broad "these sorts of genres plus whatever other weirdness people who like these genres are into" is almost best, because then people (like me!) will have less reason to be all gatekeeping about whether noise artists are a good "fit" for the thread or w/e.

I think a new thread would be a great idea- something that covers goth, industrial, "dark" music. Maybe whoever makes it can link to some Spotify playlists or something so folks know what we'll be talking about?
