It's one million years in the future of the future and the Federation is one smooth-faced humanoid with a single ridge on their forehead, tooting a noisemaker. "Happy one-million-and-some-uncertain-number-of-centuries-th Founding Day, Federation of Planets!" Everything outside their small chamber is endless phaser pistolwhipping

Yeah the Klingon war was terrible despite having promise in the first two episodes ended up being the season B-plot. The only 'war story' that's left for Star Trek to tell is the one that Enterprise was inching towards by the end, which is this idea that the genesis of the Federation comes from Starfleet forming a coalition to punch the Romulans hard in the face. There's a story there that's difficult to tell while being relevant and maintaining Star Trek's optimism, but there's some kind of WW2-leading-to-UN allegory you could draw out being forced to work together builds trust and so on and so forth.

My only real 'issue' with it is that if i want to watch the stories they're doing I can watch TNG or DS9, where they were done with better writing, acting, and production values. And the actual in-setting trademarked names.

Agreed, and I don't think Seth has ever been anything but open about his gigantic boner for TNG, specifically. I just think it's funny that I've noticed (not necessarily here, not calling anyone out) that a lot of people who were vocal about Disco not being Trek enough were also vocal about Orville being too Trek. I also disagree on the acting, and writing, for the most part the crew and dialogue is pretty great. Also the production values are great on Orville, I dunno where that criticism is coming from. The sets and effects look great, the music is a highlight even among TV shows in general, etc. Season 1 suffered from "Seth could only get Fox to greenlight it because it was pitched as 'Star Trek with Family Guy jokes'" but it really starts to hit its stride in S2. VVVVVVV I generally loathe anything he's in but he's so loving earnest and into it that I can put it aside. Think the Orville is at its best when it does stuff like the porn addiction episode; using TNG storytelling to explore a subject that Star Trek isn't set up to tackle head-on. It is the best use of the "Seth Macfarlane in space" set up IMO.

Yeah I was a bit two ways on this, but ultimately I think the earnestness gives the show that 90's tv show Star Trek feel to it. I'm happy with a world in which McFalane is doing 'remember the optimism of the 90's?' and Stewart is also doing 'remember the optimism of the 90's' but in two very different ways.

I was ready to roll my eyes at "robot/human love plot Delta Six" but it's done really well e: my most scorching take is that I think the Moclans are a more fleshed-out and coherent society than the Klingons

That would be a pretty good episode of a star trek. Dogs start rising up and demanding independence on earth or something, and then there's a whole conflict on how they fit in to society and government representation or whatever. Throw in a b-plot of Geordie hitting on a poodle and getting nowhere and you've got a solid c+ episode.
