This kind of thing really sucks because you can't easily get into analyzing the content without either playing it through yourself or watching someone else do it, and in the first you're supporting the devs unless you go the route, and in the second it's going to spoiler the whole thing. I'm trying to find out if the creators have responded anywhere but haven't found anything yet. WaltherFeng posted:Video games were a mistake.

That sucks about the lovely devs of Rachel Foster, I played a bit of it before getting a refund and they managed to make a really amazingly spooky atmosphere. I saw some people online playing this game, it looks kinda neat for a budget title. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1228520/The_Convenience_Store/

After watching two LPs of World of Horror, I'm now watching another one - this time on a Chinese streaming app called Billibilli to improve my Chinese language skills via immersion. The particular streamer I'm watching is translating everything on-screen as he navigates the menus, so it's great for learning by association. It's also pretty amusing watching the chat try to figure out what 'Doom' means and explain it to each other in Chinese. Link if you're curious: https://m.bilibili.com/video/av90428496 (note: for some reason, the mobile site only lets you watch the first six minutes of any given stream; you need to download the app to watch the entire video) Teriyaki Koinku fucked around with this message at 11:48 on Feb 27, 2020 |

You’ve probably played some European NES games which used these heavily arpeggiated riffs. The chiptunes/demo scene was also spread around by pirated software and every crack, rip, and warez had the hottest tune embedded in it.

I could've sworn World of Horror had a Japanese translation. The concept of "doom" in Japanese/Chinese would be closer to 前兆 which is omen/portent/precursor.

"Doom" has half a dozen different meanings even in English, you're going to get a different answer every time depending on just what aspect of it you are trying to translate.

I'm pretty sure why they're going with 毁灭 is because it's closer to what the Doom meter literally does in the game as a mechanic rather than the concept of dread, ie when the Doom meter gets full the Old God comes and destroys everything and the game immediately ends.

This is what portent means and every Lovecraft writer loves using it. "dark portents" is my favorite five dollar word.

It is a real game. Unfortunately it doesn't really do much like that video iirc outside of the hiding behind walls from a scary mutated garfield. It'd be neat if someone made a full game that better realized the clock tower style that the garfield vids were going for but oh well.

Still watching that Chinese World of Horror stream; again, what's most fascinating is seeing a term we usually take for granted but has to be translated and understood by a foreign audience. In this case, the streamer found the 'long pig steak' item and the comments exploded with people explaining and trying to figure out that it is a metaphor for human meat or making jokes that pork = human meat. Really great stuff seeing people trying to figure it out! Teriyaki Koinku fucked around with this message at 12:46 on Feb 29, 2020 |
