How is expressing an opinion pretentious? I didn't say that my view was explicitly more correct than anyone else's nor did I put down anyone else's enjoyment of his non-comedy stuff. I just said that his continuing status as high level tastemaker guy was baffling to me as someone who doesn't really enjoy his work. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

In any case yes I do understand how numbers work so as long as his movies keep making money yes he will continue to be a thing despite his output being uneven at best or mediocre and derivative at worst, depending on where you're standing.

Nope, you made definitive statements, at least in regards to Get Out and Us, that don't match with critical or audience consensus.

It's always lovely seeing people make definitive statements that simply don't hold water to be a pretentious contrarian, and then cry about how it's "just an opinion" when called on it. Are we all supposed to be impressed?

I'm being pedantic, but "at best" his work is considered great, not uneven.

This is all I think about whenever anyone mentions 90s horror. Like, I'm sure there are some gems in there but it's far and away the worst decade for horror (/culture).

I place the blame solely on post-Scream Dimension Films for hip, bloodless ironic horror movies. Can't stand 'em.

Also: Bordello of Blood is trash, but Demon Knight fucks, it's so good. Billy Zane is out of his goddamn mind in that movie.

every statement about a movie's quality is inherently subjective because movie quality is, by and large, not an objective thing to be measured. Do you really need everyone to affix a big bold "IN MY OPINION, WHICH IS NOT AN OBJECTIVE STATEMENT OF FACT AND MERELY A VALUE STATEMENT BASED ON MY BELIEFS ABOUT WHAT CONSTITUTES GOOD CINEMA" before they say anything about a movie?

i don't even agree with the guy but instead of actually asking why he thinks they're mediocre you're pulling a "well that's just like, your opinion, man" which is totally pointless.

Get Out was pretty good but Us never grabbed me. I watched the Kill Count on YouTube and didn’t miss much - plus the dumb ending. Then Twilight Zone was trash so there isn’t much hope here. Maybe he’ll bounce back.

I think he did okay. If you look at his list of credits there's a lot of schlock but he's also been attached to things like Twin Peaks and Titanic even if he's never the best or most memorable person in them.

He was the only good thing about that weird, lovely Wheel of Time pilot a few years ago, so I'm hoping that they bring him over to the Amazon series they're making (and that the series is well-made and popular), maybe that could spark a revival. Lots of hoping and 'maybes' though.

I said this in another thread as well. Its portrayal of the Holocaust was Saw-level exploitative torture-porn, not a stark reminder that the Nazis were capital E Evil. That stuff is mostly contained to the first two episodes, after which the show is fun.

I'll admit the chess scene in the first episode was too much, but other than that I think the show has handled the tonal shifts rather well.

Visually it looks great but even after the turn in the trailer I'm still not super pumped. The jokes aren't really landing for me and I'm sooo tired of the "stop looking at your screens!" nonsense. I mean that's just the loving world we live in. No putting that genie back in the bottle.

Hell even after the turn I can see it straying into super generic "oh hey actually her tech-y side helped save the world. We have more in common than I thought!"

Still though - cautiously optimistic.

From some scenes in the trailer, I think the end message is going to be "phone good, but only in moderation". The trailer is probably designed to appeal to the boomers and also kids who aren't jaded by boomer-think. It's working on me though, the movie looks good!
