I'm in Ohio, nobody seems to be pillaging the stores yet. Probably because at least 40% of the people here take Trump's word as gold and think this is a hoax. Once they panic it will be a Chinese super weapon.

I just got over a cold/flu that took made me feel like poo poo for 3/4 days and I'm not looking forward to having to deal with another one so hopefully I get a bit of a break. I'm pretty confident if it shows up around here I'll be exposed to it. I am confident in my health at least. I'm going to drink less so that I can tell the difference between "oh god im never drinking again" and "oh god its the corona virus" they do feel different though, but there is some cross over between a real bad hangover and the flu.

Seattle-area goon checking in, just finished the last of my grocery shopping for perishable items. I went to a Trader Joe's, which was busy but not by much more than your average weekend. The frozen food section was starting to look a little picked over by the time I got there around 2pm.

Wear a set of disposable painter overalls with hood, plastic bags over your shoes and avoid using any public toilet (so hold it in for 18 hours). Wear both a face mask and sealed goggles at all times. Eat & consume nothing exposed to the air. Enjoy your stay.

Just go outside the airport, where wind and air move freely. If you feel like looking paranoid, wear a mask and nitrile gloves. And don't touch your goddamn face.

So maybe wear that anyway out of consideration if you're sick.

The good thing is that all information from every country suggest that the majority of cases for this coronavirus (SARS-2) result in mild symptoms equal to a somewhat bad case of the common cold. So most people who get it will be fine. But health officials are extremely worried because SARS-2 is both appears to be more infectious than typical flu viruses and has a higher chance of resulting in pneumonia* compared to the flu. Combining those two factors means SARS-2 can jam up every single hospital bed in your state with new cases of pneumonia and then some. It's infectious enough to potentially infect 20% of the population in a year, and those numbers mean that even a 20% pneumonia rate is enough to fill out every hospital in the area. At that point, it will get real bad for new patients that come down with pneumonia or need to go to the hospital for other reason. Because all the spare beds are already packed with SARS-2 pneumonia cases. *This is largely how SARS-2 kills people. It gives some of them a bad case of pneumonia. golden bubble fucked around with this message at 01:30 on Mar 1, 2020 |

When shopping today I saw both pasta and hand sanitizer where unavailable in several shops. Funny thing is people see no pasta and start panick buying. Guess what, there is no more pasta because it is all produced in italy and driven here by truck, from the affected regions where production is halted. Not because the world is ending. But this is how panic flares up.

Face masks provide no real protection for the person wearing them if they're worn improperly, reused, or you're not also wearing something to protect your eyes. They're likely to increase your risk of contracting something if wearing one makes you hang around sick people more because you think you're protected. Or if wearing it makes you touch your face more because you're constantly adjusting your mask. The main reason to wear one is if you might be sick and you want to avoid spreading it to others. In that sense you've reduced the effectiveness of the mask to 0%. You may as well be wearing that mask on your elbow. Kind of like how it's also pointless to wear a mask if you're constantly fidgeting with it and scratching your nose, and it's pointless to reuse the same mask multiple times, etc. If a measure is rendered completely ineffective then it is pointless * Not pointless if you're already infected and are only trying to prevent infection in others

My boyfriend reports that the Canadian Tire near our house had large pyramids of hand sanitizer, face masks, and disinfectant wipes right at the entrance. There were also apparently signs saying the masks were non-refundable over the entire store. So we're in the ramp up to panic buying in downtown Toronto, I guess?
