I've been an American my entire life and I wear shoes in the house just like George Washington did. Sometimes I even accidentally track dog poo poo in from the back yard and don't notice until I have a trail through two rooms. Speaking of dogs, yes, the dogs come and go through the dog door and they can use the couches and sometimes the bed. I only wash my hands if someone else is in the bathroom and there's some social pressure like a shared glance or something. You may not like it, but this is the very epitome of American Excrementalism and the reason why your weak European Socialist (Communist) immune systems will never measure up.

I'm american and it bugs the hell out of me when people wear shoes ANYWHERE that you can acceptably remove them. The worst is at a house party where everyone else is still stomping around in their shoes and you wanna take yours off but dunno if that would be weird. Also in my experience most people in the south keep their shoes on but most people in the northeast take theirs off, which jives with Canada and kinda makes sense if you consider the weather.
