Not recognising the borders on the Isle of Great Britain as anything other than anachronistic yet useful ways to divide out sections of the working class and pit them against each other helps me to think we’re better off without the borders actually, and any real change will only come when we’re in a position to erode them to complete irrelevance.

You’re being defeatist for shying away from the goal of no borders, comrade.

2) it is healthy for english people, whether socialists or not, to occasionally encounter harsh socio-cultural and political criticism from their neighbours in these blighted isles, even when hyperbolic. Even the most empathic of lefty anglos suffers from a touch of chronic tannery.

I mean kinda but phrasing it like that makes it seem like those three phases are all equally morally condemnable, which is a highly questionable and probably disrespectful implication to make. As bad as a the rent situation in Dublin or Galway is I'm not sure it's quite as bad as what was inflicted on Ireland by British rule.

You might be happy to know that Joanna Cherry seems to be trying to use "SNP endorses the nasty abuse I get from trans people for my Completely Normal views" as a way of winning the selection process against Angus Robertson and I fully expect it will backfire, hopefully expelling or at least reducing the TERF presence within the party.

McAlpine has been very quiet about it recently, if Cherry tries to weaponise it and loses I think that's game set and match for the youth wing and trans rights in the snp. Hopefully.

Also stuart campbell might launch his own party, especially for terfs and twitter check marks.

(Warning: knowledge of Irish politics comes entirely from Simpsons memes)

FF & FG will never allow a Sinn Fein government or any other socialist government so no, no they're not "almost in power".

And FWIW Labour got a larger share of the vote in fascist hellscape England (34%) than Sinn Fein got in noted socialist utopia Ireland (24.5%). Obviously the very different electoral systems make a comparison basically pointless, but at this point comparing Scottish and English electoral results as a method of proving the righteousness of one side or the other is equally pointless. The SNP have no equivalent in rUK politics (unless you're feeling *extremely* uncharitable and compare them to UKIP/BXP), and the effective freedom afforded to them to say "Everything will be better after independence" while never actually having to explain how this is the case means that they pull from all points of the political spectrum. Expecting them to seamlessly transition post-independence to something even as left-wing as 2015 Labour instead of just another bland, wonkish neoliberal party is being optimistic almost to the point of delusion.

I completely blotted out politics for a few weeks after the election because I realised it was only damaging my ability to function as a human being, and you *have* to put your own health and wellbeing first otherwise you leave yourself in no position to actually improve matters for anyone. In the 90s (and even into the 00s for smaller newsagents and corner shops) most of them wouldn't take card directly, but they'd only take cheque with guarantee, either through using an imprinting machine to whack your debit card imprint on the back of your cheque or just asking you to write the numbers on.

It was popular the week before payday because you get (got, at any rate) a few days before clearance, and you can postdate a cheque (with the agreement of both parties, the newsagent would normally pay them in at the end of the week).

It was in Egypt - most people didn't have the same kind of banking things we have here and shops were mostly strictly cash only and a deposit account at the bank. Things have changed in the last few years, but many still deal in cash only.

Shoes chat:

I think it's probably a pre-boomer thing.
It's only in the last few years of his life that my dad thought wearing slippers in the house when you are otherwise dressed for the day instead of shoes was acceptable.
I remember my nans always wearing shoes in the house, though women were allowed things called 'house shoes' - not necessarily slippers. They might be high heeled things with a sort of fur trim (great for catching spilt marmalade in).
Also in the days when a lot of cooking was done from scratch, it was safer in the kitchen! I believe it was Mrs Beeton who thought 'stout boots' should be worn in the kitchen!

I don't ask visitors to take shoes off usually (except muddy trainers) but most do.
