Correction: Earlier I stated that South Korea uses BCG-Tokyo. In fact, South Korea uses their own strain of BCG called BCG-Korea, which is derived from BCG-Pasteur and closely related to the variant used in Iran. North Korea presumably uses BCG-Tokyo or some local derivative although it remains unclear.

There was one new case in BCG-Russia countries yesterday (Latvia).

Breda, Eindhoven, and Haarlem were the latest ones. The RIVM said not to worry, because "most cases have an identifiable source" (meaning several do not.)

The woman who was in the hospital with it for a week did not have a travel history, meaning it's been spreading for at least a week and a half now.

Maybe this has been discussed already/is boring, but it's interesting how academic communities are responding to the outbreak in the US. For example this past weekend the American Physical Society (APS) cancelled one of the largest physics conferences in the world shortly after the first US community transmission was announced. It was scheduled to run this week in Denver Colorado, and so the cancellation came just days before the conference start and after many people had already flown in(!):

Coronavirus fears cancel world’s biggest physics meeting
Physicists who were set to attend the American Physical Society’s Denver conference are using virtual platforms to share their talks.
Denver, Colorado

One of the world’s biggest scientific conferences — the March Meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) — has been cancelled little more than a day before it was scheduled to begin in Denver, Colorado, for fear of contributing to the spread of coronavirus. Although many physicists have been left stranded by the unprecedented decision, some would-be attendees are finding ways to share their talks virtually.

“At first, it was just a shock,” says Nicholas Drachman, a graduate student who works on protein sequencing at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. “It was clear it wasn’t a joke, but it just seemed such late notice that we were all very surprised.” The week-long meeting is the biggest on the physics calendar, and more than 11,000 people had been registered to attend.

However other major US conferences for different academic fields scheduled to start in April and beyond are still going forward for now. It doesn't take a fortune-teller to look at the deteriorating containment in the US to predict that these conferences will likely also be cancelled, but the organizers don't want to bite the bullet and make that decision yet. As a result attendees have to decide for themselves whether to book travel and accommodation for events that might not occur. The point is that even in communities that are ostensibly focused on dispassionate evaluation of empirical evidence most don't want to make the hard decisions required to proactively deal with this outbreak.

Also it would be great if this pandemic can kill the super dumb academic conference model where everyone flies in from all over the world to give a single 15 minute talk. Reliable video conferencing exists already.

I have to go to one of these in May to give a stupid, brief talk that I was railroaded into doing (didn't volunteer, don't believe in the topic, etc). I had been hoping that I would just die or something before May, and now Corona-chan has come along to grant my wish!!

It's the same republican ethos of bootstrap pulling up it happens to infect american life in funny ways. You're not doing the 'right' thing unless you're suffering so people buy beans instead of ice cream so their big strong dead dad will be proud of them.

3000 per test * 1 milliion tests = 3 billion on tests alone over the 'next few weeks' and the max I've heard floated is 8.5B. I would assume tests should be less than 10% of your acutal costs so yeah, we're probably short by a hundred billion or more right now.

now i know the new tests likely don't cost 3k, though I guess you can't rule out the new tests costing more, especially considering they are coming from the private sector now (lol).

edit: nevermind it's enough. Forgot that patients would be paying their own way so 8.5B is enough since all that will go to private companies for no reason other than to just to pad their pockets.

Pence looked paler than usual on his press conference yesterday -- people were commenting about it in other threads. There is a non-zero chance that he is actually sick.

Trump and Pence are touring the NIH today to cosplay "doing something about the virus'", so there is a small possibility that Trump could get exposed via Pence today.
