Residency Evil you should buy the XF sportbrake, it's an ancient platform so I am pretty sure that jag engineered it to whatever the peak of jlr reliability is

The one “new” 2018 close to me:

MSRP: 83k
Asking: 50k

Although I think they used it as a loaner since it has 5k miles.

I asked. The guy said the warranty started, but he could potentially sell it with the 6 year/100k mile warranty.

My neighbor has one of the Volvo SUVs that's 2 years old. The entire electrical system is failing and they've tried to fix it 3 times now. It starts throwing tons of errors and then things just start turning off until it has to be towed. It's bad.

BMWs definitely don’t do stuff like that. Except for the ones with bad ignition switches. Or bad grounds. Or bad fusible links...

Is there a Camaro shooting brake yet?

Quick question. I just noticed when I put my E46 into reverse the passenger side mirror adjusts itself to face the parking lot. How do I modify this behavior? Right now the mirror points itself straight to the ground.

It does that so you can see where you're going if you have to back into something so you can see the parking spot lines or a driveway or something. You can prevent it by putting the mirror selector switch to the passenger side. You might be able to code it out entirely, but just moving the switch is easier.

IIRC it's supposed to only go down, to help you not curb your wheels. my e46 would only do the downward movement and then stick there, so i turned it off entirely.

Flick the mirror adjustment switch to the passenger side and it won't do it.

In other brands I’ve driven you were able to set that mirror position as a saved setting and when in reverse it would goto the saved setting

BMW seems to be all or nothing from stock setup , as others said if you leave the mirror selector switch on that mirror it will prevent the movement

Curiously enough you can code it out completely , using bimmercode - which also shows hidden options of percentage the mirror will dip - 5-10-20-25% etc

I turned it off completely because I already have a backup camera. And looking at the ground by my wheel I lose that entire side of the car for situational awareness

Test drove a Z4 MT today and....I liked it. Noticed it has the "sticky steering" issue tho. It's fixable tho so I could use that as a bargaining chip if i wanna buy it I guess.

It's Maldives Blue Metallic and mint. Gorgeous car.

I just went and bought myself my very first BMW! A cheap, slightly rusty 2001 E46 320i, and the whole point of it is turning it into a race car. Me and some friends have been driving mostly old Mazda 323's and Volvo V40's in a somewhat "24H of Lemons" like racing series here in Sweden (8 and 24h endurance races with cheap old cars), but there have been some regulation changes in what kinds of cars are appropriate and we're all out of Mazdas (hard to find parts, everything is old and rusty). So, we figured we'd go to a BMW. The rules allow for 2200cc worth of engine, so that seemed like just the car for it. It's gonna take us a while to build it, plan is to hopefully go race it late this year, at least for an 8h "shakedown race". I'll daily drive it for shits and giggles until it's Miata weather, and then we'll go to work on it.

One thing we need to decide on pretty early on is what size of wheels to run, and if we're getting bigger brakes. The rules only allow for 205 wide tires, so we can't really have bigger than 16" wheels. It currently sits on a set of 15" wheels. If we were to go with the stock brakes, we'd run 15" (lighter wheels and slightly lower gearing, bigger tire selection), but we might want to go larger. Partially for a bit more stopping power (though that is of somewhat limited value on 205's), but mainly because bigger brake pads should last longer, and bigger rotors can absorb more energy without overheating. I guess there is also a bit better selection of performance brake pads for the slightly sportier models.

I have heard rumours that brakes on different models of E46 can be "mixed and matched" a bit on the same hubs, but I'm not at all sure about it. So, my questions around this:
  • Can I get bigger brakes from something like an E46 325 or 330 and bolt on to my 320 without changing the hubs (just caliper + caliper bracket)? We can change the hubs if need be, but it would be easier not to.
  • Are there other kinds of BMW's to consider there that would fit (like E39 5-series)?
  • Which model has the biggest size brakes that will fit 15" and 16" wheels respectively?
  • Will the same thing go for the rear brakes? I'm guessing there are no wheel clearance issues there, it just needs to bolt up to the hubs. No, apparently rear rotors are larger as it has a drum inside for handbrake, so that will be an even bigger limitation for wheel size.

The list of "stuff to do" isn't too long. Apart from wheels and brakes and a general maintenance of all the wear items, we are getting different coilovers and sway bars (generally lower and stiffer, might mean spacers too depending on the wheels), safety things (cage, seat, harness and some other bits and bobs), at some point a modest rear wing and front splitter, and adding all the lightness we can find. Plus all the 2000 little things you find as you go along. We're not doing too much to the engine except maybe less restrictive intake and exhaust. Don't want to mess with it too much, adding horsepower at the expense of fuel consumption and reliability is likely not worth it for endurance racing, at least not to begin with.

So I called a trusted BMW specialist in the area and he is well aware of the Z4's "sticky steering" problem, said it was BMW's first crack at electric steering and they hosed it up basically. He said it would need a new updated steering column to the tune of $3k and said I should probably get a different car :v:

But online I have seen DIY fixes for this and people seem to be happy with the results

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWIuYpXCLjI

So I'm gonna see if the owner will drop the price a few grand and maybe I'll do it......Or just get a Miata :v:
