Those are air vents. Less comfortable in cold weather though, soldiers would plug them up when it got cold.

I just remembered a comic where a guy is trapped in a dream-like world that's constantly changing around him but he's still bound by mortality so he has to eat food whenever it happens to appear or things like that while he tries to escape. Anyone know it/want to post it? It was just a one shot and not that long but I remember it being really pretty at the least.
