There's a Wilkos bang in the middle of the Arndale Centre, so I guess that's Manchester completely hosed then.

Very few people actually think that. Good lord capitalism is the pits.
It isn't even really "profit over life" though. It's rationally a way better outcome for your bottom line to have one person off sick than your entire loving staff having coronavirus. It's more just straight-up "gently caress you".

They even say in their press statement that it's to stop staff from "taking advantage" of their sick pay policy :jerkbag:

Their policy will probably backfire when they are forced to close entire stores/warehouses because of corona spreading like wildfire amongst staff and thus having nobody capable of working.

I was hoping this pandemic scare would at least highlight society's need for workers rights and decent sickness policies, but I guess reflection and preventative thinking/action is pretty rare amongst business owners and Tory voters.

Seconded. My housemate is a tube driver and has no driving licence.

Capitalism is bad, OP.

Not just bad in the sense that it treats people like poo poo, obviously you've nailed that part, but actually bad at doing the thing that it is supposed to. It specifically incentivises short term thinking at the cost of long term profit (as well as, y'know, basic human dignity)

My company doesn't pay for the first three days you're off sick, which results in 1) people coming in to work when they're ill or 2) people who are a bit ill deciding to stay off for a week because at that point you might as well. The best bit is I work in a pharmacy, which you'd think would understand about infection control, but wheeee

it's a theory for fans of theory

it doesn't go around yelling "lending money cannot bring us out of recessions - only by everyone working hard together can we work ourselves out of this mire" even though that would be its most lay elevator pitch

(e: to be clear, my own opinion of it is akin to that remark of Landau's, i.e., everything that is new is not interesting, and everything which is interesting is not new)

There’’s nothing inherent about a conventional economic model that makes people go ‘if this goes on, our grandchildren will live under a national debt of fivety quadrillion pounds, so we need to crash the economy to save them from that fate’.

But it is a predictable failure of interpretation, caused by using the word ‘debt’ for an indefinitely sustained flow. Like saying that if tap water costs so much per litre, allowing the Thames to exist for the next 500 years is obviously unaffordable. So we must dam it at source.

Sounds like your company has been very successful at reducing sickness absence rates, as wilko aspires to do.

It's definitely because of people taking the piss and being skivers that they had to make that change. You see it all the time. Why, some people won't even come to work with a quick cold.

e: I once got in minor trouble for taking a few days off due to the flu during my uni summer internship. Was very much "we understand your reasoning but it doesn't seem you are making the best use of your limited time with us".

Just gently caress the whole thing. Though it's worth noting that the post-war soviets and allied regimes were leaps and bounds worse at this then even the legal minimum in the UK. Try no pay for 2 weeks and then getting only a minimum wage, all the while requiring a doctors permission and facing regular home inspections.

It's not just capitalism that is suspect to short-termism in this respect (and many others).
