Because that's a thing that goons believe. There have been people who saw the movie and did not know it changed genres halfway through. They were surprised. There have been people who know it was going to change from crime to horror. Perhaps they saw the marketing for it, perhaps others mentioned it when talking about the movie. Some people in this group are envious of the folks in the first group. People aren’t saying “marketing spoiled the movie for everyone”, they are saying “if the marketing had been more reserved about its second half, perhaps _I_ could have been surprised about the sudden genre change”. It is wishful thinking. Sometimes people say “I wish this movie/TV show/book/video game could be wiped from my memory so I could enjoy it for the first time all over again”. This is such a case of hedonism, the pursuit of a blank slate with surprise and wonder. It’s not about what the intent of the marketing/creators of the movie was. The main point, which is inarguable, is that From Dusk Till Dawn totally works as a movie where the vampires are a surprising twist. So regardless of what Tarantino and Rodriquez were thinking when they made it, the movie itself treats the vampires as a twist. I wonder if the confusion about this is a generational thing, because maybe if you're in your 20s you don't realize that in the 90's kids spent a lot of time catching random poo poo on cable and didn't necessarily see the marketing or read spoilers or even have the movie recommended by a friend.

When I first saw FDTD was when my Dad handed me a VCD he picked up in Chinatown. I took it to my friends garage and we smoked a lot of weed and were blown away by the "twist". Whoever started this detail is a oval office.

I know we're moving past it at this point, and I know I brought it up a bit with my Plex thing, but I failed to mention that I myself was surprised by From Dusk til Dawn when I first saw it in 95 or 96. That's one of the reasons I try to maintain an illusion of it being a pure crime movie for my friends who are looking for movies.

speaking of unexpected movie twists, when my friend was about 9 or 10 years old, his dad came back from the video store with a vhs copy of 'the fly'. he asked his dad what the movie was about and his dad nonchalantly glanced at the box, then handed it to him with a shrug "i dunno, it's about some superhero" the first half of the movie actually works surprisingly well as a superhero origin story! that was until the "twist" and then the second half scarred him for life

There’s a black-and-white version of Parasite too. I’m quite interested in seeing that. Black & Chrome is really interesting and cool but it doesn’t come close to beating the original for me, the colour work in that movie is just so incredible

I remember watching a video of him on YouTube and if anything he's even more intense when he's not acting. drat I think I'm due for a rewatch, the closing sequence with that Johnny Cash song playing is so incredible.

My parents got a call from the school when I was in first grade because I was informing my classmates that Freddy's tongue comes out of the phone when he becomes your boyfriend. I would also go to sleepovers at friends' houses and bring movies like Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Creeps, Friday the 13th part VII, etc. And one time I brought the Thing to a kid's birthday party, and his father was a veterinarian...

Watching good old black and white stuff is an education in itself. It's a hard sell for most people, but I think it pays to mention that filmmakers of the time knew the medium and its limitations, and made the most of it.

Fury Road: I like the black and chrome version because I hate blue for night. I know that it's absolutely beautifully done in Fury Road and it's a stylistic choice and I can appreciate it, but a lifetime of watching blue for night in lovely low budget movies has instilled a genetic hatred of it in me. Spider-Verse: One of the best things they did in a movie full of amazing choices was change The character of Uncle Aaron from being completely evil and try to manipulate Miles into also being evil, into being a somewhat redeemable person who made bad decisions. It's like comparing Darth Vader from Empire strikes back to Darth Vader from Return of the Jedi. The Mist: This may have already been brought up in this thread, but I don't see it yet in this discussion. My favorite subtle thing from this movie is that The crazy religious lady at the grocery store is right. The moment they kill the little boy, the world is saved. Maybe it's a coincidence.
