Redfield has watched NOAA, EPA, USDA and others die on the vine. He's probably just trying to keep the lights on.

CDC has been underfunded for some time, same for most public health programs/agencies which is part of the problem.

I think that at it this point we’re past the point of being able to contain COVID. The long incubation period, multiple methods of transmission, and interconnected nature of the world makes it all but impossible at this point. Smarter money would be on a good messaging campaign that says “for most people, COVID will be a cold, but please stay home if you’re feeling ill for whatever reason, and call a doctor if you’re experiencing these severe symptoms. If you belong to these high risk categories, then come to a hospital for testing.”

I feel like any other response is going to push up on being ineffective or prompting more panic. Of course, with this administration, the response is going to be horribly bungled so you may as well do your neighbors a favor and go to sleep wrapped in a tarp every night.

A segment of the population in the US doesn't even believe it is real and is some media hype/hoax. I just assume we're all going to get it at some point, and there's groups that are going to be reluctant to come get help due to the whole DHS using every opportunity to round up immigrants thing. I would bet money someone at DHS is talking about how to, in the event of mass quarantines, use it to round up people. I have zero faith in anything, correct.

There's nothing that can be done to contain it. Most people can't afford to get tested, assuming that they even had theoretical access to working test kits. Most people won't get time off to quarantine that doesn't come out of their regular sick time. An even larger pool of people don't even *have* sick time. The government is powerless to pay for any of these things, and also can't order a lockdown like the Chinese government.

But why contain it? It's cool.

edit: I have benefits that are most likely within the top 5% if not 1% of the greater American workforce. Right now getting tested for coronavirus would cost me ~3,000 bucks and the 14-day quarantine would take 5 months worth of saved PTO. There's no loving way people are going to get tested.

We've done 10x less testing than S. Korea has, in the past week we've done about 80x less than they have so far.

I thought maybe us spending most of the decade paying russians for rides into space would help end American exceptionalism, maybe this will.

Let me assure you that the Nazis and bigots in this country have already swung into action with the "dirty Chinese disease" rhetoric. I have friends and family that are already self quarantining as much as they can, and it's not because of the disease. This poo poo is already happening now when it's limited to scary news stories. Problems look mighty small from 150 miles up.

About a week or so ago a 55 year old co-worker came in to work with a face mask after some stateside business travel, said they thought they might have picked something up at the airport. Everyone rightly told them to GTFO and go home to recuperate and not spread whatever they caught.

We got an email yesterday notifying us that the co-worker unexpectedly died the previous day, and after talking to some folks today it was apparently due to sudden complications from pneumonia / acute respiratory distress syndrome. As far as anyone knows the person was healthy without any notable risk factors and now it's got people spooked. No word yet on any testing to see if it was just regular influenza vs coronavirus.

At least I didn't have any face to face interactions with them in the past few weeks but now I'm glad I've been avoiding big meetings and dousing myself regularly with soap and isopropyl alcohol.

Coronavirus can't be contained at this point but measures should still be put into place to slow its spread. People getting sick all at once will overwhelm health services leading to more covid mortalities and also just regular illnesses being untreated. Also would be really bad if the world just ground to a halt for a month.
