Look at the ego on Garrand here. It's a comic about an obese, suicidal, bearded, anime loving, socially awkward man child, whose favorite food is chicken nuggets.

It's a goon bingo card made up entirely of free spaces.

I love Whomp! quite a bit, but he's run the "suicidal" joke into the ground a bit and it's starting to verge on the insensitive. Like, there's other ways to joke about depression that don't trivialize it.

I hate to agree with Screaming Idiot even tangentially, but yeah, I often find Whomp! uncomfortable to read. It can be very funny, and Ronnie Filyaw is clearly talented, but I feel like it frequently zooms past the "self-deprecating humor" zone and into "watching a guy self-harm in webcomic form."

I think I preferred when he had storylines and stuff. Like, yeah, it was generic "lol monkeycheese I have a pet bear and a hot girlfriend despite being fat and pathetic" but honestly? It was leagues above "I'm suicidal" and "I'm a comic artists... BUT I'M SAD!" and things like that.

I still like Whomp! and I really like Ronnie, but it's either a cry for help or an insensitive gag that's run for too long, or both.

Is he still doing the recurring bit where Santa Claus is his estranged/deadbeat dad? That was a weird bit, but it was some badly-needed whimsy.

Yeah, but even that's just turning into depression porn at this point. I kind of want to send him an email or a tweet about it, but hell, it's his comic, and if I don't like it I don't have to read it.

Pittsburgh is stored in the balls.

I know it's a Whomp joke comic, but this is actually pretty accurate for how some of my chronic mental health patients will act. They'll be having a completely normal conversation with you, but be in the emergency department because they have suicidal thoughts, or wolfed down a bottle of Tylenol, or cut their wrists a bit too deep this time.

Is it really safe though? At what point does the outlet become a reminder and reinforcement of those attitudes? And what was once one of many subjects he joked about has become the primary and only joke.

Either he's become creatively bankrupt and is relying on a single rather tasteless joke, or he has a genuinely terrible problem that isn't going to be helped until he gets actual treatment as opposed to drawing yet another "I'm seriously considering suicide" comic strip. I love Ronnie, but either of these scenarios is bad.

At least he's not drawing Otaku Dad anymore. Jesus that comic was weaponized shame.

They bear the mandate; they must sweep my way
And marshal me to knavery. Let it work,
For ’tis the sport to have the enginer

But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon. O, ’tis most sweet
