Applebees Appetizer posted:Talk your mom into looking at used low mileage LS460's, once she drives one she will hate everything else trust me. I tried, but she doesn't want to go more than 3 model years old (at the most), and doesn't want to spend over $25k (what she was approved for by her credit union - she works part time as a 1099, half of her income is SSI, and she filed bankruptcy recently enough that it's still on her credit). A later model LS definitely isn't within her budget. A GS might be, but it'd probably have to be higher mileage. And still won't be as roomy as what she's used to. She bought her current car brand new in 2002 (up until then she never kept a car more than 2-3 years), so her pricing perspective is a bit... skewed. Just like my ex thinks you can still rent a 3 bedroom house for $1000/mo, when we pay more than that for a 1 bedroom apartment. She's lived in this apartment complex for over a decade, housing prices here have essentially tripled since then. Mom also asked me about a late model Denali Yukon, I almost threw up from laughing so hard. Then I pulled up how much a brand new Denali Yukon goes for (almost $70k without anything added), and she just went silent when I told her how much they cost. Her brother/my uncle just bought one for his wife... after mom spending nearly 20 years in a high end, fully loaded (for 2003) Toyota, I don't think she'd be happy with even a Denali Yukon, the interior fit and finish wouldn't compare. Her 18 year old (2003 purchased in 2002) Toyota started developing interior rattles about 2 years ago, and it's absolutely because it needs motor mounts, not because of anything broken inside. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 18:49 on Mar 10, 2020 |

Well I could have done a literal mountain of paperwork to make something called an "offer in kind" and finally got a sympathetic person, but I was going through the divorce and I had "won", and this would have involved them just absolutely going through every bank record I ever had and I just did not want to mess anything up. I am just eating the loss. Sucks. But if I had caught it sooner and my ex hadn't thrown away so much of my mail constantly I might have known and been able to avoid these huge fines. The ship has sailed nothing I can do about it now...

I'm honestly waiting for my Yard Machines gas mower to die so I can get an electric, probably 40V Ryobi. I can't really justify the expense until then, and the stupid old-school sidevalve Briggs just keeps going. 20 years so far. Taxes: Given what some of you folks are dealing with, I guess I shouldn't complain that we (my wife and I) owed $1500 this year, because we didn't adjust our W2s (or one of them, anyway) to account for the loss of our dependent child credit. Mind you, she only turned 18 in November, so we *should* have kept the credit, but gently caress you IRS. Dependent credit drops from $2000 for child to $500 for just "dependent", so there's the $1500 right there. Plust the motherfuckers have the unmitigated gall to fine me $36 for underpaying taxes. And have you *seen* the new W2 forms? Can't just do a certain number of withholdings now - you have to calculate and give them a specific $ amount, which requires knowing what your anticipated income will be, among other things. I reiterate - gently caress the IRS.

Taxes blow. It has only been the last couple years that I have gotten the child tax credit because before I didn't qualify even though I had three children. Without that credit I would have basically zero'd out for taxes this year. Went ahead and just stuck it into savings...and a lift for the LX.

The GS will be too small, it's barely larger than the ES and a legit sport sedan so if she wants a big luxury cruiser a GS is no bueno. If you can persuade her into driving an LS she can afford, I'd put money on her falling in love with it, the car will sell itself. It's really easy to find them in excellent condition even if the miles are a bit high, but for a Lexus miles are nothing.

Highlander is the direct "Avalon, but taller / bigger" option, but has the pricing disadvantage that people are actually buying vehicles of that type. This doesn't sound like a purchasing decision where a bunch of objective opinions from the internet are going to be useful: if she can make an Avalon work with the entire 3" of extra length over the Camry (which is very much too small, at exactly the same size as her 2003 Avalon), do that. If taller is important, get the CUV version but expect to pay for it.

Car models, as a rule, don’t get smaller over time. Though I could understand the interiors getting more cramped or ergonomically difficult. That happens.

In a vacuum, the Lotus does sound fun as hell. However, Things that are good about driving in regular traffic in LA: Stoplight to stoplight power that can squirm the rear tires if that's your only chance of driving excitement. Engine note. Having the windows down. A modicum of comfort in between blasts on the accelerator. The ability to outpace most everyone that's not in a P85, GT-R or Hellcat (Corvette owners never, ever step on the gas in any situation.) Things that are not as good about driving in regular traffic in LA: Momentum cars. Smallness and the fear someone in a 7000 pound SUV is going to constantly merge into you. Fragile clamshells. poo poo-rear end pavement in a lot of places. I own a e92 M3 and a NA Miata, the Miata is fantastic on the right roads, the M3 is fantastic on all roads. If you're getting two of these get the Alfa and the F-Type. Unrelatedish, a couple interesting things that are now parking on the street in my neighborhood...

Hopefully if you have time to kill in LA and are renting a fun car, you're not wasting your time driving to Hollywood or something lame like that, so I think it opens up his options. It'd be fun to have the Lotus/Alfa/350R or something interesting and drive along PCH mid-day, or Angeles Crest Highway since it'll be empty mid-week too. *edit* The correct way to tour LA is by motorcycle, but I'm assuming you wouldn't be asking about cars if you had your bike license
