It’s going to be a long, lovely stretch to the election if anyone criticizing Biden can be handwaved away as a Trump supporter or Bernie Bro.

Bread Liar

The 2M figure is based on a bunch of wildly varying assumptions and comes up with 7 possible numbers:

586,000
6,400,000
4,700,000
730,000
8,000,000 (and 5,700,000)
590,000
2,000,000

Because I'm a dipshit, I spent a bit of time looking up numbers and comparing them to the last suggestion, the one that was quoted:

quote:

On March 8, health authorities in Golestan province declared that hospitals there were full.

quote:

Golestan has about 2.2 percent of Iran’s population, and if we assume it has the same percentage of its hospital beds (1.5 beds/1k people), the province should have 2,600 hospital beds.
Maybe a decent assumption, but an assumption nonetheless, and a number which could vary wildly. For comparison, rates in the US range from 4.8/1k to 2.1/1k.

quote:

Let’s assume that at least some people with other conditions are already in those beds and that roughly 2,000 beds are now filled with COVID-19 patients.
There is no basis for this assumption at all. OCED suggests that occupancy rates tend to average around 75%. That leaves about 650 unoccupied beds before adding in COVID-19, so the actual number is likely to be in the middle.

quote:

About 15 percent of COVID-19 patients need a hospital stay. That suggests that 13,000 people—or about 0.8 percent of the province’s population—have COVID-19 in Golestan.
15% is the rate from China, apparently. Numbers I'm seeing from Italy suggest 50%. But it's hard to consider this information in a vacuum, without knowing the criteria in each, e.g. how severe a case has to be to warrant a hospital stay, which can vary wildly.

quote:

If that rate applies countrywide, it yields 610,000 infections ...
It's worth pointing out that this went from taking country-wide numbers, applied them to a smaller province (approx 2.5% of Iran), and then reapplied those numbers back to a country-wide statistic.

quote:

which suggests a cumulative total of about 1 million infections—if we include those who have already recovered.
Iran's (official?) total is ~5,020 active, 8,042 total, which I guess accounts for the 400,000 number (62% of 1M = 400K).

quote:

Finally, because hospitalizations are a lagging indicator, double that number to account for growth in the past week: 2 million.

Per https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#what-we-do-know-the-doubling-time-of-known-cases

quote:

Doubling time for the global number of cases (including China): 19 days

Doubling time for the global number of cases (excluding China): 5 days

I agree that it's serious, but picking some random numbers and then declaring "there must be 2 million cases!" is a bit much.

That’s not how voting works in a two party system.

Man, I remember just last Wednesday I was making some crack about, “just 10 more cases and the US will be at 169!” Now it will hit 1,000 by the end of the day. I know a lot of it is increased testing, but it’s increased people presenting as well. It’s honestly nuts how fast the number is going up.

There are 13 relevant parties holding seats in the Dutch parliament (pure proportional representation) ranging from socialist to cryptofascist, liberals who pushed through the world's first gay marriage to orthodox calvinists who have opposed women's suffrage for the literal past hundred years and still do, etc. Still there is no single party that supports exactly what I do. At some point you have to compromise.

https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/health-environment/article/3074469/coronavirus-south-korea-cuts-infection-rate-without

quote:

Coronavirus: South Korea’s infection rate falls without citywide lockdowns like China, Italy

South Korea had 7,513 Covid-19 cases as of Monday, with daily infections falling for a fourth consecutive day

Officials attribute the decrease to mass testing, improved public communication and the use of advanced technology

Article also mentions that 60% of the cases are from the idiotic church that was trying to get the disease / kept doing public rallies etc during the initial urges not to congregate.
