If the way the global economy works now, is not the way it is going to work in the future...That means the fight for how it will work in the future is about to occur, and that things that seem impossible might not be shortly.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean good things, it might mean we kill people at borders. It might mean the public decides eliminating emissions matters.

Like, within a year. This kicks off a lot of dominoes geopolitically and has already begun to wildly alter the trajectory of events globally from just happily chugging along business as usual until capitalism grinds to a halt and everyone starves to death when agriculture fails.

The foundation of global capitalism, the free movement of people and goods for JIT supply chains, is currently getting its skull curbstomped in half. We are experiencing the milliseconds after decapitation when the body hasn't realized it is dead yet. Whatever plans you had for the next five years, chuck them, the century of stability is over. As a result the can is going to get kicked an extra decade, probably into the 2050's before the wheels really fall off of what we'd consider basic civilization.

Of course I could be entirely wrong in my interpretation of current events, in which case quote this next year and laugh at me. I do analysis, not doom prophesies.

so is corona having a visible effect on carbon emissions outside china? Or is that still to come if at all? Obviously tourism-related sectors will have less transport emissions but the production increase in order to compensate for people's hoarding as well as the increased need for soaps and medical/hospital equipment might be negating that reduction?

Lmao at thinking that a capitalist system that's survived multiple world wars won't survive a year where everyone gets sick for a few weeks and the annual death rate gets a bit of a boost.

No things aren't going to be exactly the same a year from now as they are now, but this isn't the end of neoliberal capitalism.

I mean don't get me wrong it'd be sweet if it was, but nah. SSDD.

the correlation between gdp and energy consumption globaly is almost perfectly 1:1. the correlation between energy consumption and fossil fuel combustion is 1:0.95, so just round it to 1:1.

meaning, look for gdp estimates. those are also going to be the emissions number. my guess is we'll see a global -5 to -10% for 2020.
