Nerf this!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it in this thread but as a former Walmart employee and now vendor that still works inside then, one of the biggest reasons Walmart has trouble restocking shelves is because the CEO gutted the overnight stocking program and they don't really stock anything on the grocery side overnight, also they don't keep anything in the back in the way that they used to so everything is basically truck to shelf. I'm in the chip side of the business working for Frito lay, I work on the gulf coast a d have been through ten years of hurricane panic buying any time a storm even thinks about forming in the gulf and this level of buying is worse than any of that.

Yeah. I explained this in the C-Spam thread a few weeks ago.

They slashed the in store workforce to the bare bones and primarily just run constant inventory audits every day to generate a daily shipment of goods from the distribution warehouse. There's almost nothing in the back room and they just get a truck with exactly what their inventory system says they need within 24 hours of the last audit.

People expecting pallets and pallets of goods and stuff would be disappointed to find out that the backroom has almost nothing in it except large amounts of sale item storage or some backstock of the higher volume items.

For wal-mart that seems like wasting a lot of money on storage space if they're really gone to a truck-shelf situation. How do you make a change like that which reproaches the business model that made you the biggest retailer in the world. People want stuff they come to you first, and now you don't have stuff in the back?

Nyc hotels are doing worse.

We’ve laid off more than half our staff already. Hotels probably going to close. I already know of one of the big hotels in Manhattan a few blocks away from mine that will close temporarily.

Good thing is we’re union and the hourly staff will get their jobs back if we do close then reopen at a later date.

Bad thing is I’m in management and risk not getting my job back if they do close.

Nyc hotels are doing really bad at the moment. Worst I’ve seen in 14 years in the industry.

They're in the middle of a huge remodel on my local Wal-Mart that's pretty clearly blowing out the walls between the back room(s) and the shopping area, converting the back room space to a more complete grocery section including a bakery, sushi bar and deli. A larger Wal-Mart in the area that already had those things still reworked their space so that discount chain Miniso could put a store inside of that Wal-Mart on it's second floor. It's wild.

That said, I'm betting not every Wal-Mart, especially the massive ones that that really, really already had everything, can do much in additional rework to monetize that back room space other than maybe act as same day delivery nodes, but even that's probably fulfilled with stock from the shelves.

Grocery store in the GTA: did about 400% of an avg busy day. Toilet paper was gone last night, anything that came in today barely got dropped on a skid before it was picked over.
All of the commercial bread, bagels, ryes were wiped out completely by the mid-day, store made loaves followed. No ground beef, potatoes, bananas, very little meat in general. Still had a fair amount of frozen foods and non-perishables but I think those will go as more and more people turning away from Costco/Superstore etc start trickling in.

I have a job with occasional seasonal downtimes but I'm kinda broke whenever it happens because I'm either really broke or am trying to save so it's a staycation almost every time. What I normally do is take a crack at my massive backlog of books, shows, movies, games, and msc. personal projects around the house. I even got a poor man's home gym set up so I work out around home too. I'm going to have a fun time catching up on that stuff like usual, but I also wonder how long it'll be before social isolation and general cabin fever rear their ugly heads. Unlike being stuck in out of lack of cash and maybe sometimes going out to get fresh air or meet up friends on the cheap, I plan on staying in except when running out of essentials and even then really having to think about it before going and risking exposure. I already have a cache of food and other supplies to last a long time so hopefully we're in the end of this before I gotta head out again.

For me, I find the key is to avoid binging any one thing and rotating activities and even the rooms I'm in throughout the day.
I gotta imagine gig stuff is going to wind down as drivers catch it but there's definitely money to be made while it lasts, before any full blown quarantine hits.

My local Coles supermarket here in Australia also stopped doing overnight restocks not that long ago so now every time I go in the aisles are crowded with pallet jacks piled with boxes of stock and harried-looking staff trying to unload them around customers. This last week the staff have been noticeably more cranky and more disheveled than usual, poo poo has no doubt been nonstop crazy

Here in New Zealand, we’ve just had our sixth case announced after nearly a week on 5 (and 2 probable), with about 415 people tested. We’ve had about 10,000 households self-isolate, with most having completed it already.

Our Prime Minister has today announced compulsory two week self-isolation for anyone (citizens included) entering NZ from overseas, and a ban on cruise ships, and health screening for anyone travelling to the Pacific Islands (NZ is notorious for infecting our Pacific cousins).

It’s expected to slow the virus but we’ll likely still get it eventually. The economy is going to take a massive hit since tourism is important, but most of us are worried about how it will affect our rugby teams since travel to Aussie and back is going to be tricky.

Our supermarkets are busy, and hand sanitiser is out, but heaps of food. We make TP in-country so there is widespread mockery of TP hoarders, although it has been happening a bit.

I just called my dad who is in his 70s and he was blissfully unaware it was killing anyone - he has agreed to read the Ministry of Health information and do the frequent hand-washing thing.

I feel very lucky so far. Good luck out there goons.
