Raku posted:I guess this is a reflection of how little preventative care we do? Yes, and it's also a reflection of the inefficiency of a captive private market. Every HMO wants their own stuff (rather than being able to assess the real baseline needs of an area,) even if it sits empty a lot of the time. In this one instance, it might save lives (rather than costing them by keeping the cost of healthcare high,) though in practice, there could be many people without insurance who wait so long for care for fear of the cost that it won't matter that the extra beds are there because they'll be too far gone by the time they seek care. Dinosaurs! posted:I’m probably just being a conspiracy theorist, but the UK’s callous plan sounds like a setup for “Look how poorly the NHS handled this. We need free market solutions!” a year from now. Agreed TBH. It's very much the kind of move outlined in Naomi Klein's book "Shock Doctrine," where in she outlines how events like this are exploited to seize power creating so-called "disaster capitalism."

poo poo escalated quickly in Germany. Wednesday: "we won't blanket order to close all schools and borders will stay open" Friday: "all schools and Kindergartens in Bavaria are closing until 4/20. Bars and restaurants stay open" Saturday: " Germany closes borders to Austria, Italy... " Sunday: "all bars, clubs, looks and non essential shops close Wednesday" Monday: state of emergency wil be declared for Bavaria Forgot to mention: of course there were Bavaria-wide elections today, which HAD to take place, but now that these are over we can lock everything down....nothing to see move along. I've been using this site as a dashboard. This morning it was counting 6000.deaths, so far. Right now it's over 800k. Hope that's a glitch. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-death-toll/ edit - 5 minutes later, the death toll is over 90 million. Either China is posting some updated numbers, or the site is glitching. GORDON fucked around with this message at 01:32 on Mar 16, 2020 |

CJacobs posted:All bars and restaurants are also closing here in IL according to our governor. Good! Maybe people will STAY HOME here in CA the governor made a similar announcement, all bars closed, except restaurants are apparently allowed to operate at 50% capacity as long as they seat everyone far apart which seems kind of dumb considering customers will still be interacting directly with servers and handing plates, cash, and credit cards back and forth etc. also everyone over 65 must stay home i agree with these measures but also kind of hosed up to put them out there without being accompanied by things like a moratorium on rent for the millions of people who depend on tips and wages to pay it, or any kind of state run service for all of the 65+ and compromised people to get groceries since many of them dont have any way to do so. if i'm still feeling ok after 14 days im going to volunteer to deliver food

"Moratorium on rent" only works if there's a moratorium on banks to not require the property owner make a mortgage payment that month. I'm also curious how any of these restaurants are going to survive making 15% profit and they just had 75% of their business shut down. They also pay rent/mortgages.
