Without something in place soon, all the restaurant workers like me - people who are stressed out chain smokers with anger issues at the best of times - are going to be facing poverty, eviction, loss of their children, etc. That's within weeks, let alone months. I know a ton of people who are actually, no-fooling, mentally preparing themselves to living in their cars and roving from town to town. This will happen without an unprecedented and radical measure. It'll be like The Purge, only all the time.

I have to go to work tomorrow. I'm a receptionist and someone sits at my desk for lunches and breaks. Seriously considering just working through the whole day but I'll have to piss sometime and my dumbass boss who thinks this will be over in two weeks is going to use the phone while I'm gone. Super bummed about sharing a workspace and not sure what to do about it.

Good news! It takes weeks or months to evict someone if they fight it. It can involve hearings. Hearings that are probably considered non-essential and will be postponed. The sheriffs or whoever probably have better things to do than help evict half the city. The health department certainly doesn't want a bunch of people going homeless (and soapless) when everyone is supposed to be staying home. They don't want a bunch of potential superspreaders roaming around, couch surfing, crowding into homeless shelters, or crashing with their grandparents. So the government has a real good incentive to just . . . not process eviction proceedings until the emergency is over. After a few months the slumlords will be behind on their mortgages and facing foreclosure unless the government steps in. And even if they could get you out, it isn't like there is anyone looking to take over your rent if half the city is unemployed. They won't even be able to hire junk removers to get your abandoned junk out of the space if you do leave. So basically in a lot of places you'll only be evicted if you agree to leave voluntarily. (Or if your landlord is a crazy gun-haver willing to risk criminal charges to assert his property rights.)

He was immediately sent home but still, one more potential point of infection cool cool cool

i'm not really going to stress to much about the possibility of me personally getting it. i assume that i will. if 80% of people are gonna get it over the next few months, 80% chance i'll get it at some point. unless the government says here is a bunch of money, everyone go be safe, apparently we're just going to operate on the idea that we're gonna get this as some point and the main thing is we don't all get it at once, then eventually it will hopefully die off or we'll find a vaccine and it'll be over. i mean what can you do? if you don't have the money to actually self-isolate for a year, i mean. take sensible precautions, is all. wash the hands, minimise how frequently you encounter people close up to reduce infection opportunities. it'd be cool if we could all hibernate.
