So are we just gonna dump them all back on the street once Coronavirus is gone? Because that isn't gonna go over well

Except the state won't be paying for it. They expect the local homeless programs to pay $190/night/person; in Alameda County that's something like $2,000,000.00 per day sorry, per month. It's been a long week.

$5700 per person per month? That's a scam. There are thousands of vacant homes in the Bay area alone.

Sorry, it's per month. All coming out the funds each County has allocated for homeless programs.

It sounds like there is some state funding, but I dont know if this enough to cover things

4:39 p.m. Newsom puts $150 million toward homeless housing: Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the first $150 million of the emergency coronavirus funding authorized this week by the Legislature would be used to house homeless people, whom he said are “among the most vulnerable to the spread” of the disease. Local governments will receive $100 million for shelter support and emergency housing. The state will spend $50 million to buy 1,309 travel trailers from FEMA and private vendors and to lease hotel and motel rooms to provide quarantine capacity. Two hotel properties in Alameda County, including 393 rooms in Oakland, have already been leased.

On Monday my brother in Fresno was bragging about ignoring the news, sticking to business as usual, and keeping up his gym routine, while I did my best to persuade him to stay home. Today, while preparing to shelter in place, he got laid off. He has two very young kids. His wife is still on maternity leave from the last one and doesn't know if she'll have a job to return to. I have no idea what this country is going to look like in a month after most of its population has had the rug yanked out from under them in what feels like an instant. I can't begin to comprehend it.

My S/O lives in the UK and it’s a lot of the same there just not as bad yet. One of her flat mates only has 1 week left before he’s out of a job and the other was made redundant before this kicked off and decided to not look for a job for a bit lol.

Adjudicating whether or not small business owners are "good" people is pointless moralistic navel gazing. The fact is that they employ lots of people nad are a huge segment of the economy and if large numbers of those businesses fail it's bad for everyone.

Offering very low or zero interest loans (that they can pay off in many small instalments over an extended time horizon) to small business got poo poo on earlier, but honestly I think it's is the best way to help places like local bars or restaurants (that are fundamentally sound but are basically taking a massive hit right now for the public good) stay afloat. Direct cash aid to laid off workers, suspend rent and mortgage payments for the duration, offer sweetheart loans to small businesses so they can keep the lights on for when this blows over.

It should be 0 interest and payments deferred for like a year.

Also loving lol at the casino owners crying for a bailout. I have no pity for them but I do feel bad for the workers but what can you do? It’s a lovely industry.

If rent at our nursery space got suspended for 1-3 months, our small business loan payments got suspended, and we got a low-interest loan for $25-$100k we could probably float it through this situation. If we get nothing I probably don't have a job in 6 weeks. poo poo is wild and there's no way to predict what happens day-to-day.

I keep trying to explain to my wife how bad this is going to get and she is sort of resistant to the idea. I hope she's right, but I fear that we haven't seen anything close to how bad it will get. We haven't even hit the first cycle of "pay me rent" vs "I have no job or money to buy food, how am I supposed to do that?" So many industries and jobs are disappearing basically overnight, but the blood starved beast of capital thinks it can slaver as hungrily as ever.

The desperation and job shredding of 2008 was only absorbed with the proliferation of everyone taking 3 extra gig jobs to keep their heads above water. The last decade was characterized by people not just living paycheck to paycheck, but in many cases, living day to day. People leased cars to drive rideshare with and had to do like 30 rides before they broke even for the day and started making any profit. People are as close to the bone as they can possibly get in this economy, and I can't conceive of any more rabbits that neoliberal austerity policy can magic out if its hat now that the hyper-individuated gig precariat card has been tapped.

But we live in the darkest timeline, so who knows. Maybe we'll bring full on debt peonage and indentured servitude to feudal corporate fiefdoms like that Amazon proxy from Sorry to Bother You.
