UF as a genre gets stereotyped as being sex-obsessed to the point of porn. Not saying that doesn't exist, but some people act like the entire genre is a post-Narcissus-in-Chains Anita Blake novel. Nothing but Anita Blake is a post-Narcissus-in-Chains Anita Blake novel.

I swear, just bringing up the genre in the sci-fi/fantasy thread got me asked about sex-free ones, because.

I'm reading UF, not paranormal romance! Jeez! God I could have a whole rant in here about the sexism going on because a lady-written UF can contain two paragraphs of sex and spend the rest of the book focused on solving murders and some relationship drama and it's still too much, too sexy, too much. Give them a good old man-written UF instead where the sex is only awful and the relationships in it don't count.

:sigh:

I've spent too much time on reddit.

Anyways I finished Kitty 3 last night and it did a great job mixing horror with the personal drama of becoming a werewolf with the other personal drama of being at a transition point in your life (wrt your career, your relationships, everything) in a fascinating blend that ended with the climax of the book not being the terrifying encounter with the supernatural creature that they only barely escaped, but instead the chapter where the still-adjusting new werewolf walked out of his hotel room and kept going on four legs, and Kitty tracked him by foot and spent a night in the desert keeping him from doing any harm. I'm describing it poorly but it was just... really well done and continued the themes of figuring out what to do with your life while big changes are happening (internally, externally) and that really resonated with me, especially given current events.

Right. So, there's a good chance that at least one of the cases mentioned here is me since I'm always hammering on about finding good romanceless/sex-free books, so I would like to set at least part of the record straight.

This is a purely personal thing on my side and as far as I can tell there is no sexism involved - I've probably quit as many male-written books as ones by women (see: not making it past Rivers of London book 2) because of it. I am sorry if this seems biased - the reason I've asked about it in the past is because I generally enjoy the books you recommend (got me to read Gideon, Steel Frame and start with Michelle Sagara) but am extremely wary of the way they are marketed - like, say, Gideon's sales pitch of "space lesbians".

I honestly think the stereotypes in question are created and perpetuated within the publishing industry more than anything else: UF and PR are being marketed as the same thing and once you venture further from the well-known names, it becomes almost impossible to determine which is which before actually reading the book. So I ask stupid questions on a web forum.

It's partially the reader's fault, and partially the industry's fault-- and by industry, I'm using a very broad term. By industry, I don't just mean the publishers, but I also mean the authors, and the way they choose to market their books.

Paranormal romance can or does often explore more overtly 'dark' themes than traditional romance or doesn't devote the whole of its focus to the couple, so it isn't really welcome in 'romantic' genre. There's also the fact that many books that are not paranormal romance end up labeled as such simply because they have a female protagonist who has thoughts and feelings a male protagonist would, but because she's a lady...

And then there's the fact that UF is kind of recognized, from time to time, as a 'hot' genre. So authors try to write a book that straddles both UF/PNR, or market it in the same, and largely just piss off readers who want one or the other.

If you want a fast and loose rule of thumb that authors/marketers use, look at the cover. Female author name + chesty man on cover who's looking broody, particularly in low light with a blue or red hue to it? PNR. Animal + chesty man? Definitely PNR. Protagonist facing toward reader, dressed, has a weapon? Almost definitely UF if a male author, 50/50 for a female author name.

If you ever come across a book you're not sure about, just open up the author's page and look at the rest of their catalog. Does it look like a woodland underwear ad shoot on every cover? Then they write PNR and there's fuckin' in that book.

This is a good post and you're okay. I think you could tell from my post but I'll restate - my anger over the sexism comes out of the place where all lady-written UF = PNR, when dude-written UF =/= PNR despite similar levels of sex and/or sex events. And the publishers sure ain't helping by putting a sexy soft-focus body on the cover of Lupi 1 when it isn't PNR at all, or having the covers of Dante Valentine be her in hot outfits, or, or.

I love PNR, and there is some crossover between the genres, but there is a line and I have a grudge over it. I don't think I'd have it from just browsing SA - I have been on reddit looking for UF rec posts and too often they are... not good. rant rant rant

Anyways, my breakfast is ready and I'm glad you generally like my recs, and I'll try to remember to point out what is and isn't sex-free in the future.

I honestly would not mind and would be A-OK with the sex stuff in Dresden and any other book if it wasn't all attached to the weird sex / gender stuff in other parts. I'm even fine with it being totally gratuitous stuff that basically adds nothing to the plot or characters if that's what the author wanna do and they do it well. Write with your clit or your dick w/e, have fun.

Contrast the way sex and gender is treated and depicted with, say, Abercrombie's Best Served Cold or First Law Trilogy. It's better written, more nuanced and realistic.

I like Jim as an author and I'll buy Peace Talks and I still re-read his stuff, I just wish he'd grow and be less cat-piss. If someone told me Jim Butcher hated women, I wouldn't believe them. If they told me he believed some unfortunate bio-truths I totally would.

The thing to realize with Butcher is that he was a nerd in his 20's when the whole urban fantasy thing hit tabletop gaming and was an avid Vampire LARPer in the Camarilla, then moved into NERO which is the same social dynamics only 'high fantasy' and swinging plumbing supplies instead of throwing rock-paper-scissors.

I find knowing that and remembering the people who were drawn to that organization explains a lot about him.

Would you mind explaining that explanation about him? I've been into various RPGs for 30+ years now, but I never got into LARP. I recall one scene in one of the DF books where Dresden is talking to Thomas at a LARP. And Dresden is a pretty avid RPGer with Billy and the werewolves (he prefers playing a barbarian with "mighty thews."

Meanwhile FATE's Dresden Files RPG is presented as a homebrew system created by Billy the Werewolf in consultation with Dresden, Bob the Skull and others with the express purpose of subtly educating people about the various supernatural factions, powers and threats.

Vampire Larp is already high-school drama levels of social gamesmanship and catty rivalries over mostly OOG poo poo as played out by aging goths, but the Camarilla as an organization added another level of favorites to play by making it a national-level game that restricted character concepts and abilities that were 'cooler' to those who sucked up to the chain of command enough. If Vampire's social dynamics were meant to be excessively petty, cruel, and filled with sexual predators, they wildly outdid themselves in nailing the atmosphere. To the point they had to make explicit rules that you couldn't travel from game to game just to kill new PCs for experience.

Huge dose of what we'd call edgelord culture these days, combined with open sexual predators. At least one of the big Vampire LARPers at my local game store back in the day has since done time for statutory with a minor. A few of the players would always, without exception, get into a 'who can be the worst person' competition and just keep escalating the atrocities while everyone else in the room looks more and more uncomfortable. The others would just start powergaming and attempt to turn every session into 'everyone sit around and watch me be badass'.

There's no mention of it on the Upcoming Releases portion of his site. I think it's far more likely that this is something that will come out September 21, 2021 and probably later than that. They're not going to drop Dresden Files 17 only two months after releasing DF 16. But maybe a late Winter/early Spring release of the Aeronaut's sequel assuming that's coming next, would allow for a September release of DF 17 in 2021.

I still suspect that it was a placeholder entry, probably on the publisher's end (obviously, bookstores are going to create entries once the publisher announces), with a preplanned release date. There's been hints that the titles and basic plots of the remaining books are already figured out, so they probably set everything up in anticipation of the release schedule remaining.

The last book was released in 2014, and there was a consistent two-year window between releases, suggesting that Peace Talks was intended for a 2016 release before getting delayed (I can't find any original release announcements, so I'm extrapolating). Add in the addition of the Spires books in 2015 (which can be extrapolated for a non-Dresden book every other year, so 2017 for 2 and 2019 for 3), and the short story anthology released in 2018, and a 2020 release fits pretty good as a prescheduled date for the book after Peace Talks.

Such a preplanned date could easily not have been adjusted when Butcher's life problems torpedoed the plans, and this was either on automatic announcement or else somebody goofed.

My guess is that part of the delay was that he was having trouble making Peace Talks work and needed to work on the next one as well. Brandon Sanderson did something similar with the second era Mistborn books.

The tl;dr that's apparently in this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpLssK14iL8

Seems to be that the writing process for Peace Talks led to a book nearly twice the size of prior ones, containing to major plot arcs. So the two arcs got split into separate books, beefed up in places to stand alone as two novels.

The only question I have left is if the Christmas Eve short is now post battle ground or between the two.

Edit: apparently the publisher offered the option of one massive book, but it would be in the realm of a $50 hardcover
