A whole lotta people mysteriously emailing at 4:30pm to say the VPN doesn't work. It doesn't work because it is at max capacity and you're only just now trying to connect? :thunk:

It's unreal how much stuff has ground to a halt because of work from home. I'm trying to stay effective but people have completely disappeared, no one's responding to emails or slack. I think work from home for them is lounging on the couch streaming netflix.

Dumbasses working from home don't realize this is their chance to show that they can be responsible and maybe it won't be a big deal to work from home in the future. Instead I'm sure a lot of them are just screwing around not taking it even a little serious.

this is:

1) pretty reliant on the fact that you have a job where full remote is possible; and,

2) pretty reliant on the fact that you think your job is important beyond a paycheck unless you're like, providing IT support to large corporate healthcare consortiums, which I guess is a separate problem

I'm perfectly fine working remote but it's eminently apparent that the majority of my company, for whom telework has been forbidden for basically any reason, is not at all cut out for it and I rely a great deal on them being able to perform. (note: the issue here is not my coworkers in other departments)

Tell them there's fewer WFH slots than there are people bum-rushing your department.

They'll sort out who's most important REAL quick that way.

We'd just get asked to explain why didn't we have enough VPN licenses for the entire office to WFH on zero notice. :sigh:

I forgot we were supposed to read the top in reply to the bottom and wondered for a moment who we were supposed to be laughing at before I got it.

I did get my first (completely unnecessary) copy and paste repeat email the other day by the most pedantic contracts person I've ever met which was annoying because I had already comprehensively answered all of those questions for her twice before but apparently not in the exact right way that she wanted

Without wanting to get into a FOSS argument, the amount of time pissed away on purchasing licenses is not an insignificant number. It would have been a great time for vendors to let you generate a key for a bunch of VPN licenses that are valid for a couple of weeks to give you a chance to get them purchased, but nope that would be too helpful.

My manufacturer gave me a 20 day surge license that automatically turns itself on when we get past our licensed total and back off when we fall under. It's tiding me over while I switch people over to the new VPN system.

that was when I got the copy-paste response I was describing. at that point I was afraid that if I responded via email anything I wrote would not come off as kind so I just picked up the phone and called.

I can see her doing the same thing to someone else today due to my distro being copied and it's just funny but head shakingly stupid.

"Can you unlock my account in B1?"

"Does it say X or Y?"

"it says X"

"OK, I can unlock your account in A1"

Context: Users constantly call the second system they log into the first thing they log into, or vice versa.

It makes things confusing because they have totally different passwords, but similar login names. They have their own lockout mechanisms.

Add onto this these logins (not AD) can be used for tons of other things, each with their own acronyms. Sometimes, they use a totally different name for the thing that makes sense to their department but doesn't get listed anywhere on the thing they're trying to get into. Bonus points if the thing they call in about is for something rarely used, and almost never called in about, and each of these apps has, usually, a separate PoC (which isn't advertised except in a living excel spreadsheet from 1995) who handles it when something basic can't be managed. :smithicide:

While I certainly won't ignore the countless hours I've spent fiddling with things and piecing together solutions from mailing lists and IRC logs, I have definitely felt a bit smug over the last few days about having taken a strong stance in favor of FOSS and/or unlimited-licensed commercial software when putting together our systems.

We have zero customer-facing services where simply adding a user costs us even a cent, it's nothing but bandwidth, CPU time, and phone minutes. It's been really nice being able to tell customers that the changes they need to their phone system to support remote work won't cost them a cent. That their routers can host VPNs for as many users as their CPUs and/or accelerators can handle. That the videoconferencing platform we were tinkering with internally is going to be made available to anyone who wants to try it at no cost.

On the Broadworks platform I used to support we'd have had to buy a few hundred feature licenses to do what I've done this week for free.

Definitely agree. Any vendor that has user-limited licensing which may be relevant to this situation should really be offering temporary upgrade licenses to anyone who wants 'em. At worst it's free goodwill, at best it's a taste that'll get the customers hooked on the services.

Opposite problem over here. We can't get people to leave. A limited number have been approved for WFH, but they keep on showing up. Management has also approved a larger group of people to work from home...but only 1 day per week. Management also told them that we have laptops for all of them (lol we don't). They also got all butthurt when I suggested temporarily moving some legacy file shares to Sharepoint Online so that people can access the files without having to be issued a laptop.

"Did you get those slow backups fixed yet?"

I kind of need full access to the storage server and the backup server to get that fixed and you insist on running some 12-hour offsite backup instead of letting me make changes and test them with a smaller test backup, so no I can't fix anything until I can actually, you know, work on it.

"I'm not technical enough to troubleshoot or fix the issue but I'm going to call support and try to fix it, instead of having you do it."

This will likely end up with me getting emailed a support article and asked to 'make these changes like they suggested'

My company is having a budget meeting and it looks like years of incompetence plus the coronavirus is leading us to a spending freeze. Essentially, no new projects, no new hires. There might be layoffs and they told us to get ready to take on additional roles. I'm already the company's sysadmin, DBA, cloud admin, operations, and application support (team of 3). not sure what these new roles will be but i have a feeling i'll also need to help out the desktop team and do more end user support. The freeze on projects will be well received, we do so many useless projects here it'll get be great to get some free time out of that.

If you're new to Zoom, when you install the client app make sure you go through the preferences and check/uncheck whatever boxes are needed to make sure it mutes your mic by default, shuts off video by default, and doesn't automatically fullscreen the window when joining a meeting. It has basically everything set to the worst possible default and you wanna nip that before you show up for a status meeting in your birthday suit.
