They didn't notify the WHO until late December, over a month after the outbreak started, and China was punishing doctors for raising alarm until mid-January. The genome wasn't published until January 11, almost two months after the initial outbreak, and the CCP shut down the laboratory that published it "for rectification" the next day. You're conflating the heroic efforts of Chinese doctors and scientists who succeeded despite the CCP with CCP competence.

I'm not saying anything about CCP competence. I'm saying your timeline doesn't make any sense. If you agree that the first case was around mid-November, it would be an unbelievable miracle for the government to have known about it until much later, simply because you don't discover new diseases immediately. Remember the first US case of community spread was only detected a month after when it was probably introduced, and this was despite knowing the disease existed and how to test for it. It seems very likely that no one alive knew this disease existed until mid-December, which points to about 3 weeks of coverup.

Whilst it is important that China/the CCP covered up the COVID-19 virus, (be it for 3 weeks or 3 months, they intentionally withheld information from the public allowing a highly infectious disease to spread globally.), I think it is equally as important the reasons why they covered it up. They covered it up because they couldn't be arsed to do anything about it and hoped it would go away on it's own. They covered it up because bullshit tinpot middle management lower level officials were scared of looking weak/incompetent in the eyes of their superiors, so they actively put lives at risk and threatened those who were trying to help. They covered it up because those superiors, and the Party has built a culture where looking like you are doing your job, and submitting numbers that look like you are doing your job is a much higher priority than actually doing your job. Resulting in admin officials threatening doctors over the doctor reporting medical findings. They covered it up for the same reason they are now trying to deflect blame. Because the paper thin facade of "China No.1! Everything we do is good, and nothing we do is bad, even those things we are provably dong bad and wrong are good because someone else once did something bad generations ago" is more important that helping to save lives.

If he uses glasses it would at least hide his reverse Raccoon eyes and might even give him an unearned look of intelligence. Regulatory capture, ideologically restricted tools and moral hazards is hell nor is the president as powerful as a king though his word carries a lot of weight. Even if he wanted to nationalise and let companies fail on a wide scale I doubt he could. I think he did manage some stealth soft nationalisation.

Welp, with the level 4 travel restrictions announcement, my company is pulling all business trippers out and giving all expats the option of relocating back to the States. My flight was changed before I even woke up this morning, and I leave glorious Nippon tomorrow. Not the way I wanted to leave; I have a lot of work left undone, a lot of stuff left unseen, a lot of goodbyes left unsaid. If this blows over in a month or so I'll be back, but for now I'm treating this as the end of my time here in Osaka

Parents sent me back pictures of empty shelves from the UK (they had a mad dash up from Portugal for the ferry in their camper van as the borders started closing). So now I'm sat at in an eerily empty Incheon, waiting for my direct flight home (because gently caress getting stranded in a third country with no family support), with most of the souvenirs ditched for hand sanitiser, surgical masks, pasta and a single toilet roll (just in case). Other than the rebooking flights nonsense, a good trip all round, and Jeju is lovely (though the drivers are loving terrible).

Seconding the life in Korea is pretty much normal. Even most of the restaurants in my town are open and running, (albeit with slightly less customers than usual). I took a photo at my local supermarket to show my parents that the shelves are fully stocked with toilet paper, as compared to the idiots panic buying in Melbourne. I'll still be leaving here in May/June after my contract ends, but that is due to largely Corona Virus unrelated matters. In fact one of the places I will be applying for new work will be the Korean Public School system

Hard agree, Osaka is a little less crowded but the shelves are stocked, restaurants are open, buskers are playing, and stores are full of people. Meanwhile I'm being shipped back to a city with no food, a mandatory curfew, and minimum two weeks in isolation "working from home".

My plans to go to Russia were thwarted when literally as I was being handed my visa, I was told they were closing the border that night. They say they'll open the border May 1st, and my visa in Korea was automatically extended to April 30th, but I'm sure I can get a few days more if I apply. Hearing the hilarious situation in the US and also flights cost money, I decided to just wait it out here. Everything's pretty normal here except more masks and a couple small precautions here and there. I really hope I can get that flight at the start of May...

I know nothing of the chinese cell phone setup. The poster claimed that people simply do not cancel phone accounts like that because it is linked to alipay. Any credibility to this claim?

Is there any info about asymptomatic COVID-19 on asthma people? I'm like 3 days without any symptom but having my chest get a bit tight and hard to breathe and I have no idea if it's the 'rona or not since in Brazil they're limiting exams for people in hospitals, and going there might be the worst mistake of my life (since it seems that hospitals are an autoinfect zone right now according to quarantine instructions and the doctors I've been talking to via videocall). Docs say maybe, maybe not, we can't test because you don't have fever and is not in hospital for it, so idk.
