I never know what causes someone to buy a bunch like this. ES had been trading pretty flat in a 20 point range from 6pm until 9:21pm when that spike happened, and 12 min later we've given it all back, so it must've been someone covering a short.

It's hard to downplay the coronavirus frenzy without sounding like an uncaring rear end in a top hat. But this virus has a very low mortality rate on people under retirement age. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6912e2.htm?s_cid=mm6912e2_w quote:This first preliminary description of outcomes among patients with COVID-19 in the United States indicates that fatality was highest in persons aged ≥85, ranging from 10% to 27%, followed by 3% to 11% among persons aged 65–84 years, 1% to 3% among persons aged 55-64 years, <1% among persons aged 20–54 years, and no fatalities among persons aged ≤19 years. 20-54 is a huge age group, too. Scary virus for the elderly and immunocompromised, who should definitely be sequestered for several weeks while the rest of us get on with things. Trump's press conferences have sucked, but Trump's been touting chloroquine. That's good, I guess he gets a single point for that one. https://medium.com/@adrianbye/is-the-high-coronavirus-death-rate-caused-by-wrong-official-treatment-guidelines-f4ef0a2903f3 quote:As of March 15¹, Korea has 8162 infections, but only 75 deaths, a death rate of 0.91%. Pointed out no one cares about west nile virus or spanish flu, knowing the origin of the disease via the name is helpful for popular understanding Sort of revelant but the spanish flu didn't originate in Spain. The most likely origin of the 1918 flu is actually Kansas. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC340389/ One thing to remember is that this current epidemic could have originated anywhere where there is large amounts of farm animals such as pigs along with close location to bats such as large swathes of the United States and China. It was discovered in Wuhan, not necessarily originated in Wuhan just like the 'Spainish flu'. This is why referring covid 19 as wuhan virus is inappropriate.

More directly, the reason why chuds are fixated on calling it a "foreign" virus or "chinese" virus is to distract from the shitshow that's been the federal response so far.

I mean, maybe some people but calling it the wuhan virus makes logical sense because thats where the breakout started (not too many people care exactly where the virus itself originated, thats just an epidemiological interest) so thats what people started calling it and now they’re being labeled racists. Our culture is bizarre. We were calling it the wuhan flu at work in the very very early days of this. Its just a natural tendency to name it after the place where it first really got noticed. We can try to correct that if we want, but labeling people racists for just referring to it as that is going to create instant pushback

On Marketwatch"s website it said Buffet is buying a gently caress ton of stuff. There's also an article quoting a hedge fund dude saying this is the bottom. Another article with another hedge fund dude saying he predicts a 76% tumble from 29k, to whatever a 76% loss of 29k is. No one knows when the bottom will be but there are already bargains to be had, and MMs like Buffet are gonna capitalize on that regardless of whether this is the true bottom or not.

I'd say today volatility anywhere will be more down to quadruple witching (day/week/month/quarter options all expiring) rather than any news. Staying well out until it all gets washed out, anything April/May is incredibly expensive right now

I know these conversations are never productive and everyone gets their righteous indignation all flared up. Trump being Trump is hosed up as alway and he is definitely being a dickhead insisting on calling it “chinese virus”, but there was nothing racist about this thing being called the wuhan whatever because it first showed up in wuhan and its in fact mostly just the chinese communist mind control squad that ever even cared. Would Boeing be worth a punt at the current price, or if it gets a bailout are shareholders likely to get fisted? Seems like the sort of company that won't be allowed to fail and will eventually come good (the last year might even be good for it long term if it makes them less complacent) thanks to all the military contracts getting handed to it.
