I have an update on “my” ginger cat:

She shows up about once a day and waits at my door until I let her in to eat. After she eats we play with a feathered wand. I’ve been trying to get her exhausted from the wand so that she falls asleep inside, hoping that she’ll realize it’s so much better than wherever it is she sleeps now.

I’m hoping she’ll start showing up more often (right now about once a day, seemingly for food) and spend more time inside, especially more time waking up indoors. Eventually I’d like to take her to the vet to get checked out.

My brother has been house-sitting whilst we've been away. Three nights in and the cat is still in hiding, and is coming out to eat half a meal before hiding again and eating the rest in secret. My bro is great with animals and is chill, won't have been hassling her or anything. He brought treats to her which meant he was allowed a brief scritch but that's all. I'm really surprised that she's not tolerating it better because he's the one bringing food. It's made us feel really guilty for leaving her but obviously we need to have the freedom to go away!

I know she'll get over it, but do you guys have any similar experiences? When we adopted her it only took her a couple of days to start relaxing around us so I'm surprised she's not settled considering there hasn't been a huge change to environment or routine.

Definitely hope never to need to put her in a cattery!

Yeah last time we went on vacation my cat Freya, who was normally the most social chill cat and will beg for scritches from strangers while we're home all of a sudden decided to say "gently caress this" and hid under the bed for the whole 2 weeks we were gone, only coming out to get occasional food/water and use the litterbox in the middle of the night. When we came home she was the first one to greet us at the door like nothing had happened.

Have you considered just closing the door behind her when she comes in and calling it a day? Cats can easily adapt to being full-time indoors if you have the necessities and enough toys/furniture to distract them.

This is assuming you know it's a stray and no one else has a claim on her, and can keep a cat in the apartment.

Exclusively (aside from treats)?

I feed mine a mix of dry and wet but my friend feeds exclusively dry but it's some weird anti-something dry that stops them getting their urinary track blocked up because one of her cats had that one day and it was expensive to fix.

So my wife and mother-in-law were watching the news the other night, had a little candle from IKEA going next to the TV (Smatrevelig - loving wonderful little thing). Dumbshit Boots hops up in front of the TV and...walks over the candle. Starts nosing around behind the TV before the burnt-hair smell starts and he realizes what the gently caress he's doing. Charred a good 1/8" off the fur on the right side of his tummy and stank for hours. He still smells like burnt hair. Luckily no major damage, just a bruised ego.

Believe it or not, this is the second time he's done something equally dumb. The first time, my wife was taking a bath with a candle next to her and dumbshit burned one of his whiskers off because he was being a nosy drat kitten and worried about my wife in the tub (him and Prinny both do this, they act like she's in distress).

More good suggestions! Our little buddy seems to be doing quite a bit better now after resting all day. He kept some cat food gravy down earlier and now is eating a bit of regular food. It’s so bizarre how it just seems to come and go in waves, but the suggestions here give me confidence that I will figure something out long term. Thank you!

I recently lost my best buddy Colin age 14 to GI cancer, after years of successfully controlling his chronic pancreatitis and IBD. He was first diagnosed in 2014, but had symptoms for years before that- namely periods of vomiting. Good news is for a long time the symptoms can be controlled with a strict diet, and other things like feeding much more often as stated above by other posters, those are good tips.
Be aware that chronic pancreatitis is far worse than bouts of acute panc, and the prognosis is not as good. Sounds like your little guy has the acute form, and this can be monitored by doing a blood panel when is asymptomatic, if it still shows elevated pancreatric whatsits, it's likely to be the chronic form.
Over about 8 years Colins timeline progressed from pancreatitis---------------------------->difficulty maintaining body weight--------->IBD--->Cancer

My tips:

-Join 'IBD kitties' group on facebook, it has a wealth of info on pancreatitis, and thousands of users if you need to ask questions. But don't stay too long or increase your anxiety by reading all the threads, they can be heartbreaking :(

- Feed a good food with as high a meat content with as few additives as you can afford. For me in the UK this meant ordering from Germany (Zooplus) to find decent offerings. Read the labels on the foods at your local pet store (once nCOV has died back obvs) to see if there's anything with 95%+ meat content from a known source (turkey or chicken etc, not 'meat and meat deriviatives' which are sweepings and stuff jetwashed off the floor.)

-Try to monitor their litter activities to notice any changes so you can discuss with your vet. In time, like my cat you may need to limit his outdoor access or eventually make it inside only. My cat did not seem to care one bit that one day the catflap was locked and that was that.

-Recognise the signs of discomfort in YOUR cat. They hide pain pretty well, but you eventually be able to read when a flare up is in the post, and be able to enact measures early like pain meds or appetite stims etc. This will make a huge difference to their quality of life

Here's a few pics of Col, he really was the best cat.

This is after getting home from a week at the vet after a really bad flare. He'd lost a third of his body weight at this point.

I feel sad :(

On the up side, I have just got TWO new cats, sisters, with 2 years on the clock.
This was what I had a question about before I saw the panc stuff:

I cannot get any cat litter for 2 weeks. I have ordered some that comes on april 4th, but everywhere is out of stock locally, and I don't want to get the 'rona by chasing around the shops for the one thing I don't have a months stock of.
What can I use as a substitute? I mean I guess I could use a load of soil from the garden, but I don't want to drag bugs etc in the house. I was thinking either a big bag of compost from the DIY store (can order it no prob) or a bag of builders sand? Shredded paper?
Anyone else with this dilemma?

Cats are currently named Blackie and Ginger, that will change, need some ideas, never had female cats before. Sorry no decent photos yet.

Sand would be good, I think? Your cats are GORGEOUS!

I am no poo poo substrate expert, but soil would do a much better job of keeping the smell down than compost, I think. And bugs are just bonus cat treats!

It's hard for me to say for sure but I put one in the safe room when I got my second cat and she seemed pretty chill in there, plus the vet recommended them for the integration period. I keep two of them plugged in with the multi-cat bottles. Refills are like $16 on Amazon for 2 vs $40 or whatever at the store. I figure it can't hurt.

Not a good time to go get their boosters etc they need at the vet. Although I half think like everywhere, they will need the business and I just ask for a mask and gloves to be available by phone first. I'm planning to keep these two inside at least 6 weeks so they can settle in their new indoor home with heating and soft furnishings everywhere they are loving it (They lived my friends workshop/garage because they brought fleas into the house that bit up their newborn son. His wife laid down the law. Hence I am re-homing them)

Are you just looking for clay litters, or have you tried looking for pine? There's specific pine litter, but a bag of pellets (like for a wood stove) would work too.

Cross-cut shredded paper sometimes works, but since the paper sorta disintegrates it is very annoying. (Less so than finding a new carpet spot to clean, though. )

I've been trying to get my cat to eat more wet food and he's developed a taste for the tuna varieties. I've been reading that the cat foods with fish in them could be detrimental to their health. He really likes the Tuna varieties and i was worried about about Mercury intake and that's what got me started down the rabbit hole. He's not even a year old yet so I don't want him to get hooked on a food that's bad for him. I found this quote from a website, and this person was pretty adamant about fish in cat food being a BAD THING.

quote:

I feed no fish, ever. Aside from the possible hyperthyroid connection (which isn't a new discovery, it's been tossed around for a number of years now) fish is high in histamines, making an allergic reaction more likely.

Fish is also high in phosphorous and magnesium which can lead to urinary tract problems.

The fish used in pet foods is generally very poor quality, and the more the fish is degraded, the higher the histamines.

The fish in pet foods is preserved during manufacturing using ethoxyquin, which is known to be a cancer-causing agent. Ethoxyquin is banned from use in human food (with the exception of spices)

Too much tuna can lead to thiamine deficiency.

Fish is highly addictive, which can lead to some cats refusing to eat anything else.

Cats may seem "fine" on a diet high in fishy cat foods, but as you may or may not know, seeming fine does not always mean fine. Cats often seem to suddenly become ill, when, what has actually happened is the illness has been building up for a long time, years even.

Since diet is so important, I commend you tonybarnaby for learning all you can about what to feed and what not to feed. Longevity is desirable, but so is the best quality of life we can give kitty. And the better the diet, the better kitty feels, both physically and mentally.

I used to have some links about fish in cat food, but I have changed computers a time or two since I last used them and will have to spend some time looking for them again. Maybe over the weekend.

One more thing. If you want to avoid all fish (as I do) you have to read labels very carefully. Fish is added to many cat foods, even if the food isn't named as fish. I mean it may say "beef cat food" but in the ingredients you will see things like "fish" "fish meal" "ocean fish"

Is there any merit to this? I mean even if it's half as bad as this person is claiming I'll discontinue feeding him the fish varieties and try some others.

I think the problem with female cats isn't really spraying, it's that they go into heat if you don't spay them and then they get even nuttier than normal running around and meowing constantly every month or so.

I wish my apartment would allow more than patio furniture, or I would build a catio for mine. I feel the same way though, I spend a ton of time worrying about my cats being bored which has led me to buying tons of toys including that wheel they only scratch on instead of running and recently inspired by youtube 'for cats videos' like $300 on aquarium/fish/accessories. Enrichment I think its called. They actually REALLY enjoy the fish tank though so worth it imo and its something I've wanted to do for a while.

I think we care because we look at their lives and think "I'd be bored if I was them" even if they might not actually be bored. Actually being able to lay around all day and have all my needs taken care of by your butler seems pretty ideal.
