Players are going to agree on a 20% paycut because all 18 clubs have been told by the AFL they should expect to take on $5m of debt. And the game is worth nowhere near as much as American sports, $5m additional debt could kill a smaller club, theoretically. It was also a decision that if they delayed it to say, June, the season is half over by then and the situation might be worse, so they wanted to start normally, shorten game times so players are not as fatigued and then play games with a shorter break and knock them out as quick as possible, get though 30-50 games in 3-4 weeks before they predict the season will be suspended. Once one player tests positive the entire comp will shut down for at least 30 days. Of course it is kinda dumb but hey, at least people have something to watch while all this is going on. Australian Soccer A-League is continuing because their season is almost over, Australian Rugby just began a few weeks ago with crowds but is now playing without crowds as of this weekend too. Rugby is in a much worse financial position being the smaller sport (only really given attention in two states) and are already begging the government for a bailout if the season is suspended. It’s a documentary series about, well, the dark backstage poo poo of pro wrestling. Season 1 included episodes on Macho Man and Ms Elizabeth, Bruiser Brody, the Montreal Screwjob, the Von Erichs, and the Fabulous Moolah. This season will have Benoit, New Jack, and the Brawl for All. I know about most of these so I’m interested in catching up and seeing how they’re presented. If you’ve got the stomach for some dark and grim poo poo, it sounds like the first season was well received.
