the scapegoating of "panic buyers" and "hoarders" is an interesting feature of this whole coverage, because they're sort of nebulous terms and it's basically placing the blame on ordinary people for being worried about food insecurity at a time when everything's in disarray and they could be confined to their homes for weeks with no guarantee they'll be able to get food delivered and no sign that the government has given this much thought like no poo poo people are panicking, it's a loving pandemic and everyone in charge of dealing with it is asleep at the wheel, a bit of panic is pretty justifiable in the circumstances (even if it's not helpful) also an observer article summing up what we already knew about why the west is stupid and arrogant, and East Asia will inherit the world

But between mass financialisation, rentierism, lack of social housing builds and the broader lack of action on costs of living vs wages there isn't any moral or intellectual justification for the continued existence of landlordism as it currently functions. These people are human filth. It's literal parasites causing a tremendous amount of pain to people that are their objective value creation and moral superiors, it's grotesque and inefficient and it can't continue. I really hope there emerges a humane way to deal with the landlord issue. Does the landlord realise if he evicts all of his tenants, and 2.5 million people have become recently unemployed, he will be defaulting on his mortgages?

This isn't a class thing, the working class would have the decency to at least pour some gravy on it. Even thinking about eating that without the gravy is a daily mail act of middle class cultural terrorism.

Was walking home from picking up the wife's prescriptions and I walked past a couple standing at the end of a driveway. I noticed a giant bag of loo roll and some shopping propped up against the door, as I was passing an elderly lady in a pink dressing gown answered and looked delighted and surprised, the couple stayed at the end of the driveway saying "don't bother coming out we just thought you might some supplies mum" and I thought "aww that's nice" 3 seconds later an elderly gent barreled out, walked straight upto them and started shaking hands saying thanks for the gifts and would they like to stay for tea. E: some light reading before bed. Jesus Christ. I'm never going to go outside again. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/03/lung-fluids-coronavirus/ Mebh fucked around with this message at 02:11 on Mar 22, 2020 |

I guess we knew this was coming but until the govt finally got its finger out on Friday, they couldn't cancel it (insurance). Jaeluni Asjil fucked around with this message at 03:00 on Mar 22, 2020 |

Mr Phillby posted:Love the implication that its only really gotten serious in the past three days, who could have known????? If you mean the Concentric decision, like a lot of things, until the govt got their fingers out, then cancellation by the hotel or the organisation would mean them being unable to call on their insurance and we're talking a LOT of money. They have kept people informed and noone will have been under any illusion that it was really going to go ahead. Typically around 800-1000 people attend the eastercon and will have paid something like £80 each to attend + hotel room bookings, and there would be hire of all the conference rooms etc. too. At least now the hotel and conference may be able to claim on insurance.

Like why would anyone have taken a picture of that chicken meal? It seems must likely someone deliberately cooked it like that and staged the whole thing to take the piss out of poor uncultured people or whatever the gently caress I dunno? Not too dissimilar to most every evening meal I had before I left home.
