I feel a visceral anger when people play this game. Yes, it's an unspiced, unsauced meal, widely consumed among the English or Irish working classes in the past few hundred years, as they were squeezed by landlord desire for cash crops, then hammered by rationing. The loss of the historical cucina povera of the British Isles is a tragedy, but here you play it up for laughs at what the unsophisticates eat, in a thread that prides itself on historical leftism.

I am incredibly stupid
the scapegoating of "panic buyers" and "hoarders" is an interesting feature of this whole coverage, because they're sort of nebulous terms and it's basically placing the blame on ordinary people for being worried about food insecurity at a time when everything's in disarray and they could be confined to their homes for weeks with no guarantee they'll be able to get food delivered and no sign that the government has given this much thought

like no poo poo people are panicking, it's a loving pandemic and everyone in charge of dealing with it is asleep at the wheel, a bit of panic is pretty justifiable in the circumstances (even if it's not helpful)

also an observer article summing up what we already knew about why the west is stupid and arrogant, and East Asia will inherit the world

you realise that the British and Irish working class has had easy access to a huge range of spices for more than a century right

there's a reason one of the traditional dishes of the UK is chicken tikka masala and it's not cause that's what all the toffs like to eat

These people are human filth. It's literal parasites causing a tremendous amount of pain to people that are their objective value creation and moral superiors, it's grotesque and inefficient and it can't continue. I really hope there emerges a humane way to deal with the landlord issue.

Also you need a certain level of 70s middle classness to even get potatoes looking that bad. Either you roast them in fat from some other part of the meal that gives them crispy edges, or you cook them in the pot with everything else and they look brown, or you're wrapping them whole in foil and throwing them in the coals.

Nobody actually starving makes a meal that looks like the aspic hell cookbook.

Those carrots look steamed to me. Since when is it a working-class thing to buy a dedicated piece of cookware to make vegetables taste worse and blander than they would have done roasted, fried, or cooked in any other way including raw?

Not sure what they're doing but they posted yesterday that it was 'an administrative error'.

I posted this yesterday:

quote:

re the Aviemore hotel that sacked all its staff:

That is some 'administrative error'.

quote:
In response, Britannia’s spokeswoman said, in comments reported by the Liverpool Echo: “Unfortunately, the communication sent to these employees was an administrative error. All affected employees are being immediately contacted. We apologise for any upset caused.”

etc

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...-staff-covid-19

Naturally, their climbdown has nothing to do with the fact that there was wide-spread condemnation, bad publicity, and tripadvisor had to stop any reviews of the hotel because there was a pile-on.

Was walking home from picking up the wife's prescriptions and I walked past a couple standing at the end of a driveway.

I noticed a giant bag of loo roll and some shopping propped up against the door, as I was passing an elderly lady in a pink dressing gown answered and looked delighted and surprised, the couple stayed at the end of the driveway saying "don't bother coming out we just thought you might some supplies mum" and I thought "aww that's nice"

3 seconds later an elderly gent barreled out, walked straight upto them and started shaking hands saying thanks for the gifts and would they like to stay for tea.

If you mean the Concentric decision, like a lot of things, until the govt got their fingers out, then cancellation by the hotel or the organisation would mean them being unable to call on their insurance and we're talking a LOT of money. They have kept people informed and noone will have been under any illusion that it was really going to go ahead.

Typically around 800-1000 people attend the eastercon and will have paid something like £80 each to attend + hotel room bookings, and there would be hire of all the conference rooms etc. too. At least now the hotel and conference may be able to claim on insurance.

I'd also fry the chicken in the lurpak too if it was me cooking it but I can do boiled if needs be. Person eating it might be diabetic.

Also mash the spuds and put more butter in them.
