To be fair butter and flour are not bad quarantine ingredients to have, and if you have those, why not make scones out of them

Scones are essential providing you are pronouncing it as 'scones'.

Do they not normally use butter or flour? How? They're like the two most useful ingredients.

I think they operate the just-in-time philosophy, and only have a small buffer of produce. They usually go to the shops every day, so this is a bit of a culture shock for them. I’ve told them to stop being so picky, each time they go out they’re potentially exposing themselves. Do they really need scones, or do they just want them. These are exceptional times. I made a coffee this morning with UHT milk. That’s the levels of sacrifice in this household!

Neither, I fry mine so they don't need cream or jam. Though if I am making scones the proper way, cream then jam, because I use a lot more cream than jam.

You know...I'm actually glad (sort of) we lost the election, now. Can you imagine the shitstorm we'd have right now, and for years to come, from all the usual suspects if this was happening under a Labour government? Just like 'Gordon Brown spent all the poonds' after the global financial crisis but times a million. People would associate socialism with mass deaths for a generation. We might have dodged a bullet, there.

Further to Dad’s Army chat I have now discovered that Clive Dunn was A. One of the youngest members of the cast and B. A committed socialist. I don’t know why that makes the world seem a little less bleak to me, but frankly I’m holding on to what I can right now.

I was thinking about this last night. Although it's frustrating how utterly stupid and slow on the uptake some people are at the moment, if it was Corbyn ordering a lockdown then you'd have the Tories and the media encouraging people to flout it because This Is Not What British People Do Corbyn would have had the blood of every fatality on his hands while criticising Boris will be tantamount to talking down the nation and our heroic doctors and nurses

For what it's worth I took my allocated outside time to Tesco this morning and there was plenty of everything. Managed to get mince (not seen for many weeks) and bread with no issues. There might have just been a delivery though. feedmegin posted:You know...I'm actually glad (sort of) we lost the election, now. I've said this a few times now but unless things go very very wrong very very quickly the Tories (Boris in particular) are coming out of this smelling like roses. They've been "forced" into every decision and Johnson gets to look all statesmanlike every day.

He's looking like an overly stressed parent offloading responsibility onto the public when he could have ordered things shut weeks ago or actually done something to ensure sick people could stay home. He's not looking bad NOW but wait until some beloved TV personality dies because they were out in London some time in the last week and hospitals leave people to die because the government didn't order any ventilators. The public are going to blame China, some abstract 'general public' or the government and you'd better do all your can to make sure it's the latter they're blaming.

After this is over, compulsory facebook and google training for all old people. Over FB last night, I fixed up for a guy to take some fresh fruit and veg up to my mum's today - he's closing his restaurant and got stacks of stuff that will just rot, it's not far from mother's (but I am 9 miles away and no bus available). Called her to say he's coming and what he'd got and did she need carrots blah blah and her reply, as ever, "how do you know all this?" From FB I say. Or on other occasions, from the Internet or Google. She is on FB but is one of those people who has (a) not yet learned - after several years - to distinguish between a public comment and private message (b) despite being shown 200 times does not understand Messenger at all (c) no clue as to how to use search (d) only interested in pressing 'like' on photos of her offsprings' offsprings in any case. And I now have to print out and stuff through letter boxes of 18 flats saying the resident's committee AGM is cancelled because none of them have got friggin' email. there is def massive amounts of boris worship going on being statesmanlike (aka not the bumbling twat he usually is) doesn't make up for the crimes against the poor that his party led, it doesn't make up for his weird choice to potentially let a quarter of a million die in sacrifice for the economy, it doesn't make up for squat. Now communication that to the public will be the challenge.

O'Hare, Doyle, Conaway and Katsulas were all in their early 60s, and Richard Biggs was only in his 40s. You can't really compare that with the Dad's Army cast who in some cases were older than that when the show began.

Ratjaculation posted:there is def massive amounts of boris worship going on Everyone is now suffering to some degree, whether it's working in a potentially dangerous environment, isolated in a boring environment or actively suffering and dying from an illness. We all know the reason for it and the actions we've taken with that knowledge but the discussion is around proportionality and responsibility and that's how you have to engage with it. People have had little actual choice about things overall - workplaces have remained open requiring attendance for most until a few days ago, sick pay protection was only expanded piecemeal and is still low meaning people didn't have the option to go on it, shops began to run out because of relatively minor increases in demand overloading the supply chain timing structure, not because the country was running out of things or there was an insane level of hording. The government openly started a scheme on terrible modelling risking 250,000 deaths which meant them doing nothing and hoped it works out and today are still not offering protections to workers or renters during this horrible time. They did not prepare the health service for covid 19, they did not prepare the public for covid 19, they chose to do nothing in the hope that we could 'take it on the chin' and that's their failure and that's what needs to be reinforced again and again. Above that is the logic of capitalism, companies being absolute bastards to their staff such as Wetherspoons not paying staff, lots of obviously optional good companies pretending to be key worker status and the general trade off of life against shareholder value being the thought process of how they, the economy and the government are thinking.

The correct way to spread your scone is to dip it into the pot of jam, spin it around, then eat it while spooning the cream into your mouth at the same time. The whole scone goes in. e: butter not necessary but if the scone is big, lube up your mouth with butter first Microplastics fucked around with this message at 13:52 on Mar 24, 2020 |

Predictably, they're resisting meaningful help for the self-employed:quote:In the Commons Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, also told MPs that he was “determined” to find a means of helping self-employed people who are losing work because of the coronavirus crisis. But he said it was “incredibly complicated” finding a way of designing a scheme that would help those in need, while not giving money to people who did not need it. Oh no, not giving money to people who don't need it! The ultimate Tory sin!
