That article did convince me to pick up Kate Elliott's Crossroads as a giant honking fantasy trilogy with giant eagles and a nuanced take on war sounds really good. (Will I ever finish her massive Crown of Stars series? Signs point to: I'm still too traumatized by the mind breaking/rape sequence in book 1, even though the lady escaped and has been working with her trauma to become a badass. Hopefully Crossroads won't contain the same intense awful in it.) I also grabbed two more of Lilith Saintcrow's works, because the more of her writing I read, the more I love it. It was also funny looking for reviews of Cormorant Run and finding Baru instead, thanks General Batoots. (yes I will quarantine the package whenever it arrives, it'll sit in the garage for a day before I rip it open and start reading. ebooks are the safest option here but I am a slave to paperbacks)

I’m going to be doing another reread of LotR, and possibly the Pellinor series (at least the first one). Any recommendations for other more ‘lyrical’ or traditionally epic fantasy series?

It’s a prequel to Marooned in Real-time which is one of my favorites, a very creative murder mystery in a crazy setting. They’re both a lot shorter and less dense than A Fire Upon the Deep or A Deepness in the Sky, but very enjoyable.

The only real caveat to the Felix Castor series is the lead just, no matter what, ALWAYS picks the option that is going to end up with him being in a shitton of pain or hurt. Like if he was offered a winning lotto ticket or a free hammer to hit himself in the dick with, he'd grab the hammer in a heartbeat. Good series, but kinda frustrating.

I really want to read books that are like the dresden files (funny, kinda brainless, explosions and cool poo poo) without you know... all the sexual assault and misogyny that made me actually throw his short story collection at a wall. So every time I see 'Like the dresden files' I hope it's the fun side. The fact that immediate talk of succubus means I'm worried this one is the other side? Reviews?

She isn't a seductive temptress so much as she is an apex predator who lures prey in by looking like a pretty woman and overwhelming them with sex pheromones . It's always pretty clear that she is a predator that feeds on men, and it's never written to be sexy. She never acts seductive unless she's actively trying to eat people, and that only really occurs in the first book that I can recall.

Seconding Dresden being a pile of garbage. Also Charles Stross's Laundry Files are an interesting read (but a bit dry, though that could be dialing into being as British as possible about everything). Craig Schaefer's Faust series is kind of similar, and handles everything Dresden fucks up much better (also another series that has a major character succubus that never actually does what succubi do on screen, but beats the ever living poo poo out of things instead).

It's a much better comparison, honestly, in that Felix Castor and John Constantine are both scousers transplanted to London who got over their heads in magic a few years previous and caused someone a great deal of harm thereby. The difference is in how they responded to it. Constantine is a self confessed bastard who'll throw anyone under the bus, whereas Castor cares too much even when it's against his own best interests.

Came across repeated references to a dawn-of-the-internet sci-fi themed mailing list called SF-LOVERS in a book about early internet culture (Netizens, @1995). Most of the links referenced in the Netizens book are long since dead (ftp servers! lol) but was able to find a semi-curated archive of the SF-LOVERS mailing list at archive.org https://archive.org/details/SFLoversDigestArchive Would love to also include links to similar Fantasy Fiction themed dawn-of-the-internet Fantasy mailing lists as well, but have come up empty (Mostly because I'm terribly unimaginative searching online). Anyone with access to usenet archives or vastly better at searching online willing to help out?

If you liked that you might enjoy the Urth list, which is discussion of Gene Wolfe, and occasionally other writers - it dates back to 1996, so hardly early internet, but hey.
