God I hope this doesn't become an own the libs thing. Austin just ordered a shutdown through April 13th but Trump's two weeks winds up on the 1st. We have one of the most powerful people in Texas government already saying we need to get back to work, I guess we'll see what Abbott says at his next presser but he's spineless and terrified of getting primaried by Dan. The state is the number one employer in the city by far so if Abbott reopens state government by rescinding work-from-home provisions people will have to choose between defying a public health order from the city or risking losing their jobs while also exposing themselves to the virus and making the problem way worse. I don't even know if the state can "order" or otherwise compel defiance of a lawful public health ordinance under current law. Liberty University is opening back up to own the libs, can Abbott compel the same for UT-Austin? https://twitter.com/SpeakerStraus/status/1242480652022407168 Well now we're screwed zoux fucked around with this message at 17:00 on Mar 24, 2020 |

Serious question: is Abbott not at least a little bit smarter than Lt. Dan? Going on the Tucker Carlson White Power Hour to say "Grandma must die so the Dow Jones can live" may play great with the Fox News Viewer-in-Chief, but I'm not so sure that it plays that well with the normals! The ghastliness of Dan's take isn't what surprises me, it's the profound stupidity and short-sightedness. I'm well aware that a bunch of the GOP would happily trade a couple million lives for some extra points on the Dow, if such a bargain could be made, but I had hoped that they'd be smart enough to realize that such a bargain isn't even possible! Productivity is not going to bounce back once the illness tears through your office and puts 10 to 20% of your coworkers in the highschool gym that's been converted into your local field hospital! The economy is not going to get better if we're burying hundreds of thousands of our friends and family members a month after you reopen everything!

Are we calling liquor stores essential here? Because like Spec's does also sell some foods. I'm down to a half bottle of Chartreuse and I'm calling it medicinal for the purposes of this whole pandemic business.

Whoof, Baytown, condolences man. At least your commute is over the Fred Hartman and not the I-10 barge magnet. I guess now that Dallas has got a stay at home order Ft. Worth does too. Its been a bit too busy to be honest, I haven't seen the gas stations empty out like I've heard stories of from my parents out on the gulf coast. One dude at the Quick Trip has been coughing all last week too. I really hope we don't start seeing yo yo orders though, Im worried that the siren call of the market will push the state to lean on the cities to open up in a week.

Certain free-market death cultists absolutely going to ramp up calls to reopen the cities over the next couple of weeks, but by the time the current orders expire we'll also have pictures of bodybags piling up in NYC and nurses using paper towels and bandanas as facemasks in Seattle, so maybe public sentiment will be a little less focused on the DJIA by then.

From my perspective of seeing the UK utterly gently caress this up to the point where London is heading towards being at least another Italy, if not worse (the subway being packed to the levels of NYC every day), Harris is actually doing ok and is a couple of weeks ahead of the curve, relative to other western economies. Cancelling Rodeo alone has probably saved thousands of lives. Don't get me wrong, it's always possible to do better but I'm incredibly glad to have got locked down in Houston rather than back in Europe.

Abbott just held a press conference and was asked directly about Lt. Gov. Patrick's statements re: the economy and he pretty much said that he was listening to the advice of medical professionals and primarily concerned with the public health of the state. He also made comments on how he isn't seeing as much compliance as expected and is open to heightened enforcement or restrictions. Honestly I kind of hate his guts, but I think he has a better outlook on this than other Southern politicians and isn't being a complete idiot. Edit: and oh yeah that the best way to restart the economy was to get past COVID-19 and not have people die. Nancy fucked around with this message at 21:34 on Mar 24, 2020 |

The entire modern American pharmacy industry has its roots in ensuring that alcohol was provided as an essential service during prohibition, soI'm fairly certain those of us who enjoy a few beers will be fine. We may just need to start wearing a Jew beanie or eating fish on Fridays.
