to clarify the home tests situation as there seems to be deliberate misinformation on this front. there is not a current plan for the government to supply tests to every house in the next few days. as of this morning the government are accepting applications for the commercial sale of tests: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-for-coronavirus-covid-19-test-kits

so any claims of next week is about the earliest a commercial test is legally going to be on the market, which means nothing on its accuracy and there is no way they'll have the number of kits necessary to catch the initial demand (and i doubt these will be anything but antigen tests to find if you're currently infected)

the 3.5m test kits ordered by the government are headline news for when antibody tests become available which check if you've ever had the infection. that they've only pre-ordered 3.5m against the UK population of... more than 3.5m should tell you this isn't going to be an overnight issue. the current plan is to test key workers (healthcare) who are at home symptomatic or are living with people who are - this is to reduce the time they are away and capable of helping out other people. more info: https://www.gov.scot/news/covid-19-testing-to-get-key-workers-back-to-work/

e: also there's new info on production of hand sanitiser for an idea of how slow to react they currently are: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/producing-hand-sanitiser-and-gel-for-coronavirus-covid-19

Guardian is now reporting that the tests are coming (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/25/uk-coronavirus-mass-home-testing-to-be-made-available-within-days) so if its bullshit it's official bullshit.

The tests look like ELISAs, basically pregnancy tests with the "pregnant" bit swapped out. They're pretty easy to mass-produce, but I'm still impressed/sceptical at the sudden turn around from "no tests" to "3.5m"

So are these actual home tests in the way pregnancy tests are? You... cough? spit? emit some other fluid? on to a thing which then changes colour and says "DED/NOT DED"? Or is it something that still requires a lab to process/interpret?

The press coverage does make them sound like it's testing for generic class of antibodies but I came across this which says it is covid-19 specific antibodies.

If they are enzyme assay tests like they imply, I guess you'd piss on them the same way as you would a pregnancy test, and it would just check for antibodies in the urine in the same way, the control line goes dark to say it's working, and the enzyme impregnated line goes dark if you're preganté with corvid.

The IGM/IGG tests look legit but they may not be very accurate, likely 60-70% in the early stages of infection at least but at least they shouldnt return false positives.

Oh yeah, the graun get a special award for:

quote:

The test detects the presence of IGM, an antibody that arises very early on in the infection, and IGG, which is increased in the body’s response to the virus. The results of some of the tests on order can be read by anyone, but others would need to be interpreted by healthcare professionals.

Which is so close to being accurate, but also so very, very, wrong.

I'm surprised, given that they stopped doing those in school (they used to do 'find your blood type' in biology) because students kept loving up and hurting themselves.

If it's the only way it's the only way, but it's a bit unusual to see something like that in a mass rollout. I guess you really don't want everyone queuing at public offices to get the test though.

It'll accelerate quickly as people with testing kits come into contact with people that don't have testing kits. We can expect an exponential increase.

People generally order those knowing some idea of what they'll have to do in advance though, it's a bit different to dropping 3.5m of them on a bunch of people already in pandemic mode.

Hopefully the media will be fully explaining things in the weeks ahead so we don't get a repeat of that one student who manages to gouge out a chunk of their fingat and gets blood everywhere and has to go to the school nurse on a national scale during a healthcare emergency.
