been listening to the denton county fire scanner. just have it on in the background. pretty quiet but then every once in awhile there's a call like, 42-year-old woman who is six months pregnant and is vomiting blood and calling the COVID hotline, another patient having trouble breathing, another patient having trouble breathing, etc. etc.

My local county / city area has a scanner FB group where a couple of people basically transcribe. It's immensely entertaining. Here's one from the other day:quote:...caller reports there's a subject in the 6800 block of CR## that is threatening to kill people. Dispatcher says there is a lot of screaming in the background. Deputy the dispatcher had asked to respond is coming from a situation where there's a "male in the middle of the field in a wheelchair with a broken leg"

ReindeerF posted:Without googling, is Collin County where Plano is? That just sounds like a very Plano-area thing to do. Story time: My local small business, Great Cartridge (oh god please order something I'm so poor right now) is in Plano (Collin County) and my storefront was open last week all the way up through Friday the 20th. That whole week 99% of my customers were 60-80 years old. And allllll of them wanted to tell me how silly I was for wearing gloves and making them stand farther away from the counter than usual. With the lockdown of Dallas County on Monday and (I presumed) the lockdown of Collin coming shortly thereafter I started working from home taking orders on the phone and online and now I have the same goddamn boomers calling me asking why I'm not open because technicallyyyyy as an ink and toner supplier we're considered an "essential business." Collin County's order that "all businesses are essential" is not making it any easier for me, and it's not making me want to go back to the store anytime soon because Collin County is likely going to be a hotbed of Coronavirus because of their shortsightedness.

https://twitter.com/lloydalter/status/1243626974985236481 lmao Staten Island's "density of a distant suburb" is 2.5x the density of Houston or Dallas. Of course the most dense population zones in Texas are colonias so we could have a different humanitarian crisis brewing.

zoux posted:https://twitter.com/lloydalter/status/1243626974985236481 I mean, the point of those tweets was that the way New Yorkers have been saying "we only have the most COVID-19 cases because we're just so dense" is pretty clearly bullshit (and typical NYC exceptionalism). Density doesn't seem to be the driving cause behind the infection rate, so the fact that Texas is sprawl-land won't necessary have any bearing on how hard we are gonna get hit.

Well, we've now got all our veggies in, except for some corn, which I'm going to try co-planting with beans, which I've heard is an effective way to keep the soil quality. Anyone tried that? Turning even a few square feet of Houston yard into tillage has turned into a forever war with one of the most insane root systems I've ever seen. Already bust a (admittedly fairly crap) mattock on that nightmare but it's there now and we should get 18 stalks out of it. Thanks for all the garden advice, goons. Very much appreciated.

One of my doctor friends on the Gulf Coast messaged me today and said, "The Governor needs to give this a name, like Coronavirus Selena or whatever, then people will start taking it seriously. I can't count how many patients have said something like, 'This is the worst thing I've seen since Carla or Celia.'" I lo'd because it's true. Just name it as a hurricane and the whole Gulf Coast will be like, "Oh okay, that's what we do."
