The majority of abortions are not invasive and require taking two pills.

At least in the US as of a couple years ago, most abortions were still surgical. And the medical option has side effects that mean women should only use it as a fallback option.

Even discounting the physical risks, many women describe an emotional or psychological impact from getting an abortion. I've certainly never talked to anyone who was happy about getting one except as an improvement over the alternative.

The process needs to be easily available and non-judgmental, but at the same time doctors should work with patients to minimize the risk of unwanted pregnancy in the first place. And wouldn't you know it, countries with comprehensive reproductive health systems tend to have fewer abortions.

It is absolutely the most monumental event since the Second World War—bigger than the Cuban Missile crisis, the Moon landing, the fall of the Soviet Union, and 9/11.

The phrase you mention has long been called the “Chinese Curse”, though it originated with a Victorian aristocrat.

We're really, really loving lucky that covid-19 is not as deadly as something like Ebola or worse.

If we don't spend billions on stockpiling medical supplies and PPE, and updating and upgrading our technologies and our surge capacity... the next time some pandemic comes around we'll be just as hosed as we are now, if not worse.

I keep seeing how "Oh, Spain, Italy have higher Coronavirus deaths than China has, and the US has more cases overall" from numerous media outlets. One thing in particular that is really striking to me is that they seem to be taking China's metrics at face value, especially the new caseload reports. Yesterday, there were only 55 new reported cases with 54 of those being "imported".

Now, as someone who deals in risks and metrics every day, this seems like utter bullshit, and statistically unlikely, especially for a country where the disease should be still spreading, albeit at a low rate. Another thing bugging me is a report that after Spain bought some testing kits from a Chinese pharmaceutical company, they realized the kits had a high rate of false negatives, and inconclusive positives, pointing towards further issues with testing and reporting over there.

My issue is, is there any source that can find some sort of nominal middle ground between the Tucker Carlson ethnofascist bullshit and the breathless HuffPo stuff that can reasonably cover this sort of thing? I really think that there's a lot of harm pointing to China as some sort of universally effective responder to the virus, while at the same time, finger-wagging at them as the ultimate blame holder is equally as harmful.

I'm pretty sure China is posturing to show how more authoritarian, state controlled countries will handle situations "better" than the west. They're trying to draw comparisons between USA and the UK and are looking brilliant at it, for now. Doesn't help that both the leaders of those countries are bumbling idiots.

Mr. Nice!

One of the things to remember is the manner of response. Italy, Spain, the UK, and USA said "nah no big deal" and let poo poo spread unfettered. The USA is the most severe and poo poo is about to get really bad with deaths. The USA is also under reporting deaths because we aren't testing a lot of dying people. Deaths are getting listed as caused by pneumonia or other complications with no postmortem testing.

China locked the gently caress down once they took it seriously. Everyone was confined to their homes. Anyone testing positive was isolated. Food and essential services were provided to people.

China is certainly under reporting for sure, but any place that has locked down similarly has shown low infection/death rates. South Korea, Honk Kong, and Singapore are examples.

Gross.

Mr. Trump, who has faced a growing outcry from state, local and health officials around the nation that they will soon face critical shortages of the mechanical ventilators needed for coronavirus patients unable to breathe on their own, played down the need for ventilators in an interview Thursday night with Sean Hannity, the Fox News host.

“I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators,” Mr. Trump said, in a reference to New York, where Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has made pointed appeals for federal help in obtaining them. “You go into major hospitals sometimes, and they’ll have two ventilators. And now all of a sudden they’re saying, ‘Can we order 30,000 ventilators?’ ”

With that said, there are some positives that I'm seeing. A hospital ship has finally made it to Los Angeles, Italy significantly cut their COVID rate (though there was a huge spike in deaths), and the Army Corps of Engineers is setting up hospitals hyperquick. Turns out, when you give LTG Semonite a non-bullshit (wall) mission, poo poo gets done.
