Problems look mighty small from 150 miles up.

The Villages also has something like ~70,000 senior residents with a median age of ~70. It's like a giant live-in Disney World for rich retirees, and pretty much a ready made buffet for Covid.

Maybe it's changed but my grandmother and grandfather moved there like a decade ago because it was cheaper to live than MA and my grandfather's health couldn't deal with the winters anymore. I visited once about 5 years ago and it felt like being on a college campus full of 70 year olds.

Yeah - my parents live in a smaller "active living community" of ~10K people in Southern California. Mostly republican and lots of retiree drama. Some family friends just bought a place in the villages and were planning on moving there this fall.

My mom is sheltering in place mostly, but all her friends are still getting together to play cards, drink wine, play pickle ball, etc.

It's mostly middle/middle-upper class. My mom knows a lot of folks who are on reverse mortgages and basically paycheck to paycheck until they tap out.

Bernie was leading in donations from active duty military a few weeks ago. Lots of the military is not white. Women can now serve in combat roles. It's not the 70s anymore. Or the 80s. Also the military is a socialist community, and when people get out now, they realize it's like leaving an uncomfortable couch in the living room of a decent little house to sit on a pile of tires that are burning in the garage of a capitalist society that surrounds the military. Throw in that touch of socialized health care (VA) and education (GI Bills) during endless wars and drat right you're going to have more liberal veterans over time.

Vietnam was a different time, different military. The wartime experience now is nothing like Vietnam. Old vets like to play the gently caress you got mine fiddle, that's why they're so republican bent, besides the decades of pandering to the military with giant budgets. They like to believe their health care, or any other benefit, has to be earned. And you know, living through the best decades in human history believing every bullshit John Wayne or Clint Eastwood or republican lip service line about manliness and sacrifice regardless of any of it actually applying to them.

I'm just rambling at this point, but the military now is definitely not the military of any prior generation.

On the other hand, the military is increasingly being composed of people who join from military families, creating an insulated warrior-servant caste that is protected from the ills of society at large while kept in constant servitude to the state because of patriotism/indoctrination.

While the draft plays a huge role in our cultural memory of Vietnam, only a third of the US troops who fought there were drafted. Even during the worst parts of the war, there were still plenty of good 'ol boys willing to fight the commies for Uncle Sam. And afterwards, a huge number of them didn't believe we lost because we spent a decade and fifty thousand American lives playing not to lose with a complete lack of any coherent political or military strategy, but instead that we could have won if not for those goddamn longhairs and gutless politicians, who protested the war and dodged the draft while they and their buddies fought and died to preserve the American Way in Southeast Asia.

Didn't help either that the Democratic Party somehow managed to be on both wrong sides of the issue, with the war really kickstarting under LBJ (but not, these vets would say, to the point that it could have been won), while the most prominent Anti-War activists and politicians were Democtats (who betrayed our troops and let them die for nothing).

That's been a thing for 70+ years. "Daddy was a marine so that's what I wanna do" poo poo has been around since we decided to keep an active duty military on hand at all times. Lots of disenfranchising goes on once those children of veterans realize what kind of bullshit dad was huffing. They tend to stay if they see no other option in the world outside of the military, or knocked up a stripper from the Cat West and now need 18+ years of steady income and benefits for their herd.

Lots of mormons in the military now though. I guess they'd rather be on the side with all the guns. After all, they have plenty of experience being the target of the military some 150+ years ago.

Considering this is the Hellfucker 2020 timeline, it would be only fitting that we made first contact during COVID, and Trump was the one to greet the aliens.

Also regarding hydroxychloroquinine- as predicted, there's been a run on those drugs in places that may not even have a lot of COVID cases, which has resulted in shortages and price-gouging for the drug that people use to treat malaria. In one West African country, the price has increased 10x in the past few days.

the demographics are increasingly trending towards the military being a lifestyle choice rather than a "this was the only way out Podunksville" choice. part of this has to do with the lower strata of America becoming increasingly unfit due to poverty and decades of right wing white holy warrior propaganda.
