Here's a source that isn't run by climate-change-denying, intelligent design proponents: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/05/travel-costs-outstrips-disease-budget-170522101226365.html

quote:

The WHO, which employs 7,000 people worldwide, said that less than half of its travel costs were on its staff.

...

In 2016, the agency spent $200m on travel while the figure was $234m in 2015, the year of the Ebola outbreak in west Africa, according to AP figures.

In comparison, the report said, WHO spent about $71m on AIDS and hepatitis last year. On malaria, it spent $61m, and to slow tuberculosis, it invested $59m.

...

WHO's transport costs were much higher than that of other comparable aid agencies, AP continued.

With 37,000 aid workers, Doctors Without Borders spends about $43m on travel per year, while the UN children’s agency UNICEF, which employs 13,000 people, said it spent $140m on global travel in 2016.

Yeah what's unfortunate is that apparently "You know China is kind of poo poo and the WHO is loving up because of it" has become a partisan topic so it's mostly right-wing trash sources having their broken clock moments talking about it right now.

For alot of people this is the first time they've been hearing about China a whole lot in recent memory and most of it is Trump dog-whistling and trying to cover his own rear end, so like everything else to do with the man legitimate criticism of the CCP in this crisis has been poisoned by his proximity to it and the go-to assumption for most people is that you're getting marching orders from right-wing media if you suggest anything negative about China.

Goddammit gently caress Trump and the GOP so hard for making it this easy for PRC propaganda to stick.

I think it was someone theorizing in this thread was spot on a month or so ago (Trump Time Dilation Syndrome has hosed up my brain, it feels like it was a millennia) when he was heavily referring to it as the “China Flu.”

He is such a primitive moron but somehow his lizard brain is incredibly adept at manipulating the media - by calling it China Flu, he could “trigger the libs” and fire up his base, while getting the media to focus their outrage on that, instead of his bluster, ignorance, and administration’s incompetence that let this get out of control in the US.

Now he doesn’t want this to hurt “his” economy and the GOP Death Cult is desperate to get back to work on or before Easter to enable him/that. It’s a shame these idiots will infect and kill a bunch of innocent people with their callous actions instead of letting this actually run its course. But they are so unbelievably short-sighted they can’t think or do otherwise.

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

Here's a question that is semi-related to the WHO bootlicking the CCP.

Does Medicins Sans Frontieres work in China?

Coz I would imagine that they would face but-tonnes of administrative, cultural, and financial hurdles as they try to offer medical services to people who need them. As a non-profit, (I think?), they don't have the cash that the CCP, and various local tinpot dictator local officials would demand as bribes/costs to be allowed to work. Also, given the CCP's love of detaining foreign nationals over real or perceived slights, surely MSF doctors are prime candidates to be either quietly disappeared, or publically martyred.

Also how is MSF dealing with the Corona Virus globally? Travel restrictions must be hurting them. As would be having extra patients, and dealing with extra incompetent officials.

They will work deep inside war zones but not China. iirc at one point pre-Obamacare the US system was so hosed they started operating there.

There are a couple poor country free healthcare NGOs that still work in the US, Obamacare didn't actually fix much. There are some charities run by non-Chinese people in China, even religious ones. I know of some that run/support orphanages. I imagine there are more. Or fewer, for all I know they got shut down in the last nuts year we've had.

Off the top of my head chinaconcern.org and, you can donate even if you're wherever.

If you can't find a job then you can ask the local government to assign you one, but no-one would want this unless they were actually broke and starving, because you get a room and subsistence and something pointless to do.

I have a feeling it depends on how exactly you lose your job. Guy I know worked at a slaughter house, the slaughter house went bankrupt.

The government gives him a monthly stipend so I guess about what you'd expect from unemployment, but they also made him go train to bake bread (like large-scale packaged bread) and I guess he's going to eventually be expected to work at a bread factory.

I forget exactly, but I think some people in this thread were talking about some 4chan-derived statistic about Chinese phone cancellations as a proxy for virus deaths.

I found out about that today by accident from someone who cancelled along with loads of people they know:
Apparently China Mobile, one of the biggest mobile phone companies, had a really good promotional deal a while back, but tied to really high monthly rates for a year.
Loads of people got it, then a couple of months ago that deal ran out, and here we are.

Nah, only phone manufacturers like Huawei have the ability to make the police arrest and punish people - not the carriers.

Remember those lovely tests that the Spanish bought from China? Turns out they had gotten them from a no-name drop-shipper rather than a respectable manufacturer. Even in this time of crises, you get what you paid for at alibaba.

quote:

But excitement turned into despair when it emerged that 58,000 of the kits, which had already arrived in the country, were unreliable, offering only a 30 percent detection rate. The government pulled the entire batch, leading to a host of questions about the process the government followed when it purchased them.

On Wednesday, the Chinese embassy in Madrid tweeted that the manufacturer of the tests, a company called Shenzhen Bioeasy Biotechnology, was not yet licensed by the Chinese agency for medical products.

In a statement Thursday, the Spanish government said it would return the kits to the Chinese manufacturer and stressed that they had not been bought directly from China but from a company in Spain.

We had this a few pages back and there is no way this was some shady unlicensed biotech company in loving Shenzhen of all places. You don't manufacture tens of thousands of biotech products and then ship them overseas in tandem with state propaganda trumpeting it if you don't have explicit state approval.

The CCP's ability to self-own continues to amaze though. Someone earlier in this thread said that with a 30% sensitivity you might as well flip a coin as your test, but IMO that's unfair because the coin will be right 50% of the time
