They at least have expressions, and the scenes seem to deliver well despite the lack of a laugh track. For what they are, which again, is not something I enjoy, they actually work well.

I mean... the power dynamics are pretty bad, but he doesn't actually make a move on Daphne until she's a resident iirc. He's very clearly infatuated with her, and for most of the show it doesn't go beyond that. I don't think he explicitly wants to cheat on his wife, he just wishes he wasn't married. I could be misremembering ofc, but he divorces Maris before making a move on her I think? And when they get together, the relationship itself is pretty healthy, aside from some issues where she doesn't respect his boundaries regarding doctor-patient confidentiality.

He got divorced over the course of like 4 seasons, married Dr. Mel, and then dumped his new wife to be with Daphne on their honeymoon (at Daphne's wedding). Niles was kind of a dick. They both kinda were to be honest. He's still my favorite character in the show though. But hen we got more and more of Daphne's family because of them getting together, and that's really the worst part of the entire show's run.

Niles is one of those characters that is objectively terrible but since we see him through the lens of a tv show and everything is framed to make him likeable it’s easy to overlook that. Same way women love a man in a romantic comedy but in the real world it would be worrying if you were to experience it

Not every character, but you'll get one or two per show to contrast the personality to others. I was just thinking of My Name is Earl where Earl is trying to be a good person, and the humor is that his attempts are often kind of backwards. RE Fraiser's theme song, I love catching up on this thread & watching the latest Binging With Babish this morning, especially since in the beginning he used that theme song as the intro for his videos.

Community had pretty "good" characters, and it was often a point that when they weren't being inept as gently caress their ethics were actively making their lives harder/shittier than they probably deserved.

I'll admit that I did miss the first "good" in your sentence But yes they are, or were in their time, good shows for their intended audiences. There were good family values and poo poo on display (like whoa) and while Full House was mostly just inoffensive family faire, Home Improvement was actually pretty funny.

The Bloop posted:All of them? For Full House: Literally every adult emotionally abuses every single other adult on the show and spends the entire run of the show making everybody else in the house feel like poo poo. Stephanie Tanner repeatedly puts the family deeper into debt (crashing a car into the kitchen, getting busted drinking with Gibbler at a party and the legal fallout from that, etc.), DJ is no better (literally floods the kitchen with cement at one point) and Michelle is a gender swapped Damien that lives to make every single other character in the show suffer. For Home Improvement: This show was so loving terrible people didn't even notice when the actress that played Jill was swapped from Frances Fisher to Patricia Richardson. Also gently caress Tim Allen and anything he touches.
