I could swear one of the kids got swapped at some point too.

In the original run of Roseanne the oldest daughter Becky got swapped out until like, the last two seasons when the original returned iirc. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

I didn't watch the re-make of Roseanne but I understand that both Becky actresses were in it and they made stupid jokes about this fact.

The replacement was Sarah Chalke who was later on Scrubs and had a run on How I Met Your Mother. One of her nicknames after being on Roseanne was "Second Becky"

Really there are good parts in Parks and Rec, the cast is too talented for there to not be, but you could rename that show "Why Clinton Politics lost to Trump" and it'd be accurate.

PHIZ KALIFA posted:

Leslie is the villain of the show.

She exploits, badgers, and borderline abuses most of her colleagues, who are her only friends. She attempts to remake the town in her image, rather than serving the public as an actual servant of the public. It's not that she's doing the right thing in a city full of idiots, she's doing what she wants and blaming the people for not aquiescing to her dominance. Her messaging fails 100% of the time because winning the support of the public doesn't matter, the only time she engages with the public is as an expression of her own vanity.

I love the show, but upon a rewatch Leslie becomes monstrous.

PHIZ KALIFA posted:

it's easy to get caught up in the universe of the show, where leslie is the "normal" viewpoint character that other characters bounce eccentricities off, but in actuality everyone else is more grounded than her except for one or two personality quirks. Leslie has no core of normalcy to work against, she is completely absorbed in her mission to transform Pawnee.

Like, is there a single relationship in the show she doesn't treat as transactional? She only interacts with people to either get something from them, even if it's just a reinforcing of her identity vis a vis the importance of her job. She is the exact perfect archetype of the impotent captured liberal, and it's frankly distressing how nobody picks up on this.

The show, on multiple occasions, just stops and has characters lecture Leslie (ie, the viewer) why what she's doing is wrong and ineffective. She apologises, and refines her techniques.

Yeah, exactly. Anne also calls her a steamroller. When she becomes a city counselor and loses control of the Parks department, she goes back and fucks everything up trying to reassert control of a department she never had actual authority over in the first place.

There's a case to be made that Parks & Rec is a Changeling: The Lost game, where Leslie is the True Fae and everyone else is a human going through their Durance.

Parks and Rec has never been more succinctly explained

It's funny because it couldn't *not* be funny with that cast, but hooo boy it's the most Hilary Clinton sitcom I've ever seen. At least 30 Rock had the self-awareness to make fun of Liz Lemon's bougie-feminist leanings from time to time.

The one thing I really respected about 30 Rock was that the first two seasons pretended Liz was struggling financially to make her more relatable, then the 08 crash happened. They had a few throwaway lines where Fey is handwringing about her finances and Baldwin says to her "you're the head writer for a popular NBC show, you're doing ok" and the pretension to financial issues was never brought up again.

Anyone saying 'I'd watch this' owes it to themselves to give Vicious a try. No Patrick Stewart, but Ian McKellen & Derek Jacobi star.

From Wikipedia:

Series overview
Vicious is set around the lives of ageing partners Freddie and Stuart, who have lived together in their Covent Garden flat for 49 years. Freddie was a struggling actor and Stuart worked in a bar when they first met, but their careers are over and their lives now consist of entertaining their frequent guests, making sure that their aged dog Balthazar is still breathing, and hurling antagonising comments towards each other.
