Yeah as other's have said never be afraid to make a plan, it doesn't have to be super complicated and Yooper is great at making your plan work as well as possible in the game itself. I used to make ridiculous war crimes heavy plans because it was fun, never expected them to be chosen but it is strangely fun designing plans for this sort of thing.

90% of what I did when I decided I wanted to pen operations was read power crystals posts, so in other words I endorse it.

Also, when you do the naming, make sure to find a funny picture to go along with it. The most detailed plan in the world is useless without a funny picture :colbert:

On the subject of planning, I'll be sitting this one out. I haven't had time to dive in and really analyze the scenario, and I won the last two votes anyway. Someone else can get our people killed for this one!

At the risk of torpedo'ing any votes for my proposal, I made mine entirely while stoned. It's not too difficult as long as you break it down into steps. Get an idea of what you're working with and working against, determine what you want to accomplish (ex. hit the secondary targets? blast the air defenses or ignore them?), then figure out how you want to accomplish that (draw off the CAP, then strike? send everyone in at once? make a diversion?). After all the concept work is done it's just a matter of writing out the actual assignments. Doodling on a map helps, as does having a good theme for the callsigns.

I edited in screenshots of the doctrine screens. Maybe it's worth adding a link to that post next to the weapon explanation posts in the OP?

...on the plus side I'm feeling much more angry now than I expected so this totally helps me get in character.
As people know I'm happy to test other mission plans, pull weapons and loadouts if you don't have CMO, and generally advise if you need help with mission planning. Just put a message in the hiredgoons channel on Discord.

That said, here's how I think about missions from a strategic perspective:
1. Deal with enemy air (CAP - combat air patrol)
2. Deal with enemy AA (SEAD - suppression of enemy air defenses)
3. Kill the things that need to be killed (Anti-Surface Warfare)

Basically I just match assets and capabilities to each of these things until they're all accounted for.

Most of the rest of the things in the complex plans are logistical details to increase the efficiency of asset use. The biggest thing to learn if you get into details is the capabilities of each weapon system, both our own and the ones we face. Ranges, how it acquires targets, and from those what it might be vulnerable to. But those details are not always necessary and they can add complexities that don't hold up in the real mission.

You could do a perfectly viable mission as simple as this:
1. Launch Eagle CAP, use AIM-120 when available, reserve 2 planes for Strike
2. Launch SU-24M2 SEAD, use the best ARMs available, reserve 4 planes for Strike. Targets: Bar Lock, both Buks, Pantsir
3. Bomb money targets with the remaining planes, use SDB and stand-off weapons

With a plan like that, 3 lines, Yooper likely can sort the rest out.

The above would, for most of our scenarios, be all I need. It's cool to see a well orchestrated scenario come together but you'd be surprised how well CMO can do with some basic orders.

A buried commlink is a soft target. Consider it a single 500 lb bomb or so.

The randomizer roll gives you 7 KH-31's and 33 AIM-120C for the mission.

You're in Francophone Africa, odds are someone there has cut a deal with some French company and thus EU is willing to allow arms to go into the area. Of course, there's still old Russian surplus around but those are old rusty Shilkas and Tunguskas that have spent the last 20 years in some depot in Siberia until they were sold because Moscow needs their hard currency.

Because theoretically this is a cyerpunk-ish era novella, and things like 'exclusive tv camera missilecam footage' and 'on the ground operative reports' and 'every dollar spent goes to more boom' are believable patreon perks.

Alrighty boys, it looks like with the intel from Zebba we have a good idea of what to look for for the defense of the area. With the air defenses link vulnerability, we have a chance to launch an awesome one-two punch to take out our Pri 1 objective cleanly and efficiently.

With that, I propose Kano? I hardly know 'em! Cat-Face (by popular re-naming)

It's a simple command by negation op with 2.5 phases.
Phase .5: (Green Lines with Red delineation points): We launch a couple of sections of F-15's loaded to act as a primary defensive counter-air unit.
Phase 1 (Orange Lines) A flight of Fencers and Eagle Escorts Launch to begin an attack on the Construction Yard. Timed several minutes later, the second flight of Fencers and Eagles Launches with the intent of attacking the Air Defence Link.
Phase 2 (Purple and Brown Lines) The Bombers, once the Air Defence Network is knocked out, proceed to destroy the Pri one tasking around Ti'Ga'Dan
The biggest hitters out here and the greatest threat to our assets are the Buks. Our pal Zebba has given us a way to eliminate the threat of the system and enable us to engage it somewhat safely.

Phase .5
The DCA will act as an insurance policy and a possible lure for the enemy SU-25's. They'll take up point at Point 13 and Point 14 and monitor. Their goal is to provide additional security for our bombers as they go south and to repel early enemy probes. The red boundary delineates a rough no-fly zone around Kano to avoid Tunguskas and other defenses.

Phase 1. A flight of Fencers with an Eagle escort section departs Zinder (our right airfield) and heads towards the construction yard. Launched at a time to make sure they arrive a few minutes later, the other flight of Fencers with Eagle escorts departs Maradi, loaded with a mixed bag of missiles and penetrators. Their mission is to go south and after as much of the enemy air force has been pulled away, use the penetrators to bomb the air defense link. Once the link is severed...

Phase 2. With the defense link severed, our units will stream across the black bounty (rough standoff for the Buks) and begin aggressively destroying as much enemy defense as possible. As they go south, any additional ammo will be expended against the palace.

Ready: We'll Have a ready launch of our remaining 4 Eagles, two per airfield. One will be loaded for Air to Air optimization (Pylons or whatever non-AIM missile is most capable), the other optimized for ground strike (local base commanders discretion).

Armament

-Escort Eagles (2 Eagles Per Escort, 4 Total): 4x AIM-120. 4X Python

-DCA Eagles: 4x Python, 4x AIr-120 (2 Per DCA, 4 Total)

-SU-24s. 6 Per Flight. (12 Total). 3x KH-31's per flight.
-Left Flight (Zebba's target) Will carry ground attack weapons optimized for ground penetration and general area coverage.
-Right Flight (Construction Site) will carry short ranges of missiles and bombs optimized for the attack.

-Ready: Standby on the runways after our flights leave, their present to plug up any holes that may emerge (too many defense planes destroyed or bombers unable to accomplish their mission). The launch will be base CO's discretion, if they feel like the assets won't survive the mission, they have denial of launch authorization.

-EMCON: DCA planes are unrestricted in EMCON. Eagle Escorts are authorized full radar upon crossing the Nigerian border or if they believe their aircraft's survival on transit necessitates the use of RADAR or other emitters. Bombers are emission authorized within 50 miles of project targets or for the survival of their aircraft. Readies are at CO discretion.
